This city in the Sonoran Desert might be the last of the Old Southwest. Of course, every Southwestern city loves to make that claim, but unlike the rest, Tucson supports its older homes and establishments. Church-goers still make time to go to the St. Augustine Cathedral, built in 1896. The Rialto Theatre has been around since 1920, but it still packs a crowd when Fun., Bon Iver, Of Monsters & Men, or the Indigo Girls come on tour. People who admire older architecture don't even need a reason to visit the Hotel Congress, constructed in 1919. The Old Pueblo Trolley, a real, working trolley, will get you around most of these attractions, too, which completes the experience. Whole neighborhoods might remind you of set pieces in period films, like El Presidio and Barrio Santa Rosa, the latter on the National Register of Historic Places.

On the whole, however, Tucson is anything but stuck in the past. As the home of the University of Arizona, it has the energy of a college town, even as it has an old soul.

The city is nestled between the Santa Catalina Mountain, Rincon Mountains, Tortolita Mountains, Santa Rita Mountains, and Tucson Mountains, which means you have no excuse not to get outside! Even if you're not a hiker, biker, or outdoorsman or woman of any stripe now, that most likely won't be true once you move here. The mountains, desert, and clear blue sky are too beautiful to be missed. Get an eyeful of desert scenery in Seguaro National Park, named after the distinctive "cartoon-style" cactus that grows like weeds in this part of the country. The best thing about Tucson's scenery is that it changes-- look for snow on mountaintops in the winter and desert flowers in the spring.

As a college town and as part of the Southwest, Tucson has a rich and fascinating local culture you'll want to explore. From the 1600s onward, travelers have been drawn to this city. Then they changed the city through their contributions to art, science, and technology. If today you can geek out at the Titan Missile Museum, it is because of the geniuses who were drawn to the Tucson area. If you get a chance to attend the TAMMIES (that's the Tucson Area Music Awards), it is because the area's multicultural past makes it a fertile ground for musicians to learn their craft.

Companies and institutions with an office or headquarters in the area include the University of Arizona, the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, as well as IBM, Intuit, Inc., Texas Instruments, and Sunquest Information Systems. With this well-educated population, Tucson would also be an ideal place to start a business, if you have an entrepreneurial streak. In any case, this is a city where you can feel confident taking the next step in your career.
