There's no question: you will be captivated by the city under the big desert sky. The changing colors of the mountains in the sunset, the sunny winter days and cool winter nights--all of it will make Phoenix an unforgettable and unique place to live for you and your family.
Famous for its miles and miles of open trails, here you can get lost--or found--in the enticingly-named national and state parks, like the Sonoran Desert National Monument, Tonto National Monument, Agua Fria National Monument, or the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. Each name conjures a little bit of the grandeur or mystery of this site itself. Who can resist the urge to discover the lore behind a place like the "Lost Dutchman State Park?" For the record, the name comes from a supposed "lost gold mine," situated within the appropriately-named Superstition Mountains. Don't feel that your discovery of the Phoenix desert has to be limited to hiking or biking. You can get to know the land just as well on horseback or in the bed of a hot air balloon. You don't necessarily have to go far to find a vista that suits you: city dwellers love Papago Park, where they can experience the best of the outdoors without the long drive.
However, not long ago, Phoenix was a part of the Wild West. As residents know, it never completely lost that wildness. For a real Wild West experience, you might have to work a little harder, and get out of the glittering high rises of downtown and into the heart of the Arizona desert, into a place where the stories are longer than the shadows. The drive to Grand Canyon is your best teacher for this area, if you can get past the bizarre rock formations and sudden heat waves that turn into a shimmering mirage. When you get to the Grand Canyon, you'll not only see the sights, and take the photos; you'll feel the impact of thousands of years of history carved in stone.
There's still more to explore outdoors: Arizona is a state of fire and of ice. You'll soon discover the fire, in the form of the heat of hundreds of days of sunshine. But you may not know about the ice: that is, the snow-capped peaks of Flagstaff. It's a relatively short drive up to those mountains, where tourists love to come and ski. Bring your snow boots, too, or simply go north and get to know your Arizona neighbors.
Back home in Phoenix, a wealth of culture is waiting to be discovered. One of the most famous places in Phoenix is the Heard Museum of Native American Art. The state is home to over 20 tribes, leaving the Heard to the task of collecting and studying their immense artistic output. Another well-known place is the Orpheum Theatre; you'll know it by its Mission Revival architecture, and by the big names from Broadway in bold type on the sign outside. You can't go without a visit to the Desert Botanical Garden. While you may see the specimens on display during one of your hikes, the gardens also boast rare and exotic plants that you just can't find anywhere else.
Finally, Phoenix, while beautiful and mysterious, is also simply a great place to call home. It's a true sports town, with NFL, NHL, MLB, and NBA teams the Arizona Cardinals, Coyotes, Diamondbacks, and Suns, as well as over 200 golf courses. It's also the sixth-largest city in the nation, and growing. With the growth come new amenities, like the high-end shopping at Biltmore Fashion Park.
