Tips and Advice on Designing Your New Home

A professional Design Consultant gives helpful hints on how to select the best options and upgrades for your new home.

When it comes to designing a new home, today’s buyers are faced with more choices than ever before. From cabinets and countertops to fireplaces and flooring, every room offers an extensive array of finishing touches and design options. So with all these choices, how can you be sure to pick the right ones?

Eschelle Jackson, a professional Design Consultant for Richmond American Homes, says, “As with any important decision in life, the best way to start is by arming yourself with information. I’ve helped a lot of buyers design their new homes over the years, and I’ve discovered there are several important guidelines you can follow to make the process a little less confusing…and a lot more fun.”

By following Eschelle’s helpful hints, you can ensure that you’ll get the most out of your design experience.

To begin, Eschelle tells people to put themselves in the right frame of mind. “The first thing I always tell buyers is to prepare to enjoy themselves,” she says. “This is an exciting and fun time, and it’s important to relax and try not to worry too much. Some people can feel a little overwhelmed and intimidated by all the choices they’re faced with, especially if they’re buying their first new home.”

While ‘not worrying’ can often be one of those things that’s easier said than done, Eschelle notes that there are several easy steps you can take to start sorting out choices in your mind. “I advise people to start off simple,” she notes. “Tear pages out of your favorite magazines and catalogs that reflect your personal style. Establishing your color palette and design style right at the start will then let you focus on the details, so you can easily choose countertops, flooring and paint colors that complement your preferences. Whether your style is casual and relaxed, graceful and timeless, or eclectic and unexpected, you’ll find that there are a wealth of possibilities for every room in your new home.”

Eschelle says that one question people often ask is how they can make a brand new house feel like their own unique home. “Many people think of new houses as big white walls and clean palettes—and they know it’s up to them to fill in the details to turn that fresh, new space into a beautiful, comfortable place that feels like home. If possible, bring fabric swatches of your furniture to help coordinate your finishes. Make a list of questions and ideas you have so you make sure to address every detail when it comes time for your design appointment.

“Another thing to remember is to not go too wild with trendy colors. Using neutrals for more permanent items, such as countertops and flooring, will ensure that your home has a timeless appeal. You can let your creative side shine through with the addition of bright or fashionable colors on the furniture, bedding, drapery and artwork, which can be changed out more easily.”

She notes that paint is one finishing touch that can have a significant impact on the style and feel of a home. “Features like paint can enliven and complement all your other signature finishes. Painting your walls a warm, rich color is an easy way to give your home that cozy, comfortable feel. For a personalized look, you can coordinate your paint color with a favorite piece of furniture, or maybe some artwork or an heirloom area rug.”

Aside from making choices that fit your own personal style, is there anything else buyers should keep in mind? “It’s very important to try and make choices that will enhance the value of your home,” Eschelle says. “This means choosing the finishing touches that will not only make your home more enjoyable to live in, but may also make it easier to sell, often at a higher price than a comparable house at the same location.

“For example, your kitchen is the room guests tend to linger in, and it’s often the first room buyers look at when you decide to sell your home in the future. Cabinets are one of the most significant features in your new home, and they are a difficult item to change in the future. I recommend choosing beautiful, quality cabinets because they have such a tremendous impact on the overall style of your home.”

One thing is certain: There are a number of considerations to keep in mind when you’re designing your new home. But to keep the process simple and straightforward, Eschelle often reminds buyers of an old adage that seems to make every life decision a little easier. “Just take it one step at a time,” she says. “And if you feel like you need help or advice, never be afraid to ask. That’s what we’re here for.”
