A veritable haven for wildlife and lovers of nature alike, Rankin County offers the best of both worlds, striking a perfect balance between two different lifestyles. Known as a center of tranquility and calm, it is also one of the most rapidly expanding counties in Mississippi. Containing two towns and a village, this county also boasts seven cities. For example, sitting on the wildlife-rich, historical Pearl River is the capital and largest city in Mississippi: Jackson named after General Andrew Jackson. Also renowned for its musical roots (predominantly jazz, gospel and blues), this people’s slogan for the city is: ‘Jackson Mississippi: City with Soul’.

Other cities encompassing Rankin County are Richland, Pearl, Flowood and Brandon which is the County seat. There are two towns within Rankin County, namely Pelahatchie and Florence. There is one village called Puckett, a tiny, quaint little place, formerly known as Clear Creek. Settlers first arrived at Puckett Village in 1837 and it is now the educational center of South Rankin. A tiny, welcoming place, a sign was erected in the 1950s which read, "Welcome to Puckett - 300 good friendly folks and a few old sore heads"!

Rankin County has its fair share of sunny days which offer residents plenty of opportunities to go out and explore the many beautiful surrounding natural features.  It is an absolute paradise for wildlife lovers. Pearl River is the 2nd largest river in the county and is considered the most crucial provider of natural habitat for creatures (including black bear and sturgeon) in the area, since it is largely comprised of swampland, with accompanying marshland. Apart from being able to enjoy these beautiful nature reserves, you may also take pleasure in and benefit from Rankin County’s massive man-made reservoir and its host of indoor and outdoor recreational activities.

It is fascinating to look back and see how people lived and what they achieved on a community level in days gone by. Rankin County Historical Society was established in 1981. In partnership with the Brandon Library, they work together to gather and maintain all local, historical files for research purposes.

If eating out is something you love then Rankin County certainly does not disappoint. Its specialty is the good old steakhouse. Deep South Pops is also a favorite with the locals. It is one of many restaurants in the area run by and especially for families. The kids will love the healthy and unusually flavored home-made popsicles, and the shakes are to die for!
