Slidell, Louisiana is the town on the North Shore. If you're not familiar with the famous Chicago version of the "North Shore," suffice it to say that this "North Shore" isn't all that different from its Northern counterpart. This is where members of New Orleans elite live, raise their families, and sometimes work--all while maintaining a connection to the Big Easy. With an easy commute to Stennis Space Center and the Lockheed Martin Manned Space Systems complex, it's easy to see why New Orleans families choose Slidell as their hometown. Once you know Slidell better--with its shops, dining, and emphasis on family--it's even easier to see why so many have chosen this town as their home base in their exploration of the Crescent City.
One of the main attractions in the area is Olde Towne Slidell, which, thanks to recent development, has a huge variety of shops and restaurants sure to please every member of your family. Looking for a night out--without the kids? The Time Out Lounge, BB's Corner Pub, and Olde Towne Tavern have cold beer on tap--a crucial ingredient in a great night out, and a charming atmosphere to match. For a refined afternoon out, why not "gallery-hop"? From Asche Studios to DuBuisson Gallery, you can have a good time simply looking at the art, even if you decide you're not ready to take any of it home just yet.
Since this is still southern Louisiana, and food-- spicy, savory, and unique Cajun food-- is a local specialty, expect to eat well during your time as a Slidell resident. Whether you're more of a cook (don't miss the Farmer's Market!) or simply someone who likes good cooking, you can find what you're looking for in the kitchen in Slidell. Whether you're in the mood for accurately-named Tacos and Beer, or more eclectic Bistro de la Reine, your taste buds will never be bored! You owe it to yourself to sample local specialties like crawfish etoufee, po' boy sandwiches, and muffaletta. But keep in mind that New Orleans is a cultural crossroads, and you may be as likely to find a new Italian restaurant, or Chinese restaurant here, as anything else.
Even though some of the development in Olde Towne Slidell is new, this is no cookie-cutter town square either--just take a look at the walls around you. Olde Towne Slidell is known for its street art and murals. Local artists colored on the walls, (not a good example for your children, as you may want to point out) and the results are stunning. While a day out at Olde Towne Slidell has always been pleasant, these murals, which feature local plants, animals, and sights, make the walk just a bit prettier.
Finally, Slidell's biggest selling point for many residents was the fact that this is a family-oriented town. If you're raising kids, you should know that St. Tammany Parish Schools are the best in the state. If you want your children to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, you could do no better than Slidell. Annual events, such as Christmas Under the Stars in Griffith Park, bring Slidell together, ensuring a warm and tight-knit community, many of whom will gladly look after your children as though they were their own.
