Williston, North Dakota sits at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Mississippi Rivers, a storied land once trekked by Lewis and Clark. Today, this small but colorful town has an estimated 20,000 residents, making it the 6th largest city in the state.
Founded on an agricultural economy, today Williston is a booming oil town. Named after the Williston Bason, from which many precious natural resources are abundantly mined, including oil, coal and petroleum, this town has seen a sharp and steady rise in population. But in addition to its oil which has put this city on the map, Williston is also a tourist attraction, drawing people to this storied land on which Lewis and Clark once set foot. Many of Williston’s notable attractions are related to the town’s history including the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, Fort Buford and the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center. You’ll also enjoy Cut Bluff Overlook which pays tribute to Lewis and Clark’s campsite, and many of the old buildings such as the James Art Memorial Center and the Old Armory, which today have been converted into sites to preserve the arts.
But if you’re looking for more than history, this town is full of recreational surprises including the fun to be had on Lake Sakakawea or out at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course. You’ll find recreational centers with sport courts, and you can also catch a Williston Keybirds basketball game, or see one of the many sporting events put on by the athletes at Williston State College.
Williston is also a great town for families with many educational opportunities in the city. There are two public school districts serving the area including Williston Public School District 1 and New Public School District 8.
