One of the best kept secrets of Wisconsin is the county of Vernon. It has been nicknamed God’s County. Its spectacular location inside hidden valleys is what gives this place its peculiar characteristics. An outdoor lifestyle and extensive communities proud of their heritage, cultural diversity and values shape their life and impresses those who visit it.
As a land of incredible beauty, bordered by the Mississippi River and with plenty of lakes, rivers, streams and countered hills, it is possible to enjoy outdoor activities all year round. Paddling, boating, hiking, biking, bird watching, horseback riding, fishing, skiing and snowmobile are among the activities and sports which are regularly practiced here. At least 3 Millions visit it every year for fishing activities. Because it is crisscrossed by many miles of trails, a lot of recreation areas, parks and nature centers have been developed. One of them, Esofea/Rentz Memorial Park is the oldest park. It has more than 3 miles of hiking trail, several rustic campsites and open areas for practicing volleyball or softball and a picnic pavilion. It offers something for everyone. Next to it is the Bad Axe River Country Club, a nine-hole golf course, disk golf and mini-golf.
Through the year, communities celebrate their heritage in many ways. Festivals, cultural activities and a very well preserved system of museums confirm their traditions and values. Among those museums is The Vernon County Museum which presents an exhibition of artifacts used by native occupants, fur traders, European explorers, lumber barons and agricultural pioneers, in order to preserve the history and ethnic heritage of the whole area. Special mention has to be made of Hillsboro Historical Society Museum and Log Cabin, which preserves the heritage left by Czechs In the mid-1800's, who immigrated to the town of Hillsboro, bringing their European traditions that are exhibited there and enriched their cultural diversity. Also, Coon Prairie Church, the first Lutheran church built in this area by Norwegians, which shows the heritage of the Norwegians. Also many farms and commercial buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Aside from all that, Vernon is also a great place to live. It has plenty of services and its communities are pleasant and welcoming. Traditionally its economy has been oriented to agriculture and tourism and recreational activities. In the last years the “Vernon Economic Development Association” has promoted initiatives to those interested in developing new business ideas or expansions of existent business.
