These are the Coolest Community Amenities You’ll Find in Houston

The Treehouse at Cane Island at dusk.

The Treehouse at Cane Island in Katy is the ideal place to catch a concert or movie or grab a coffee in the café on the first level.

Who says you need to be in Montrose or Lower Westheimer to find a neighborhood with character, charm and great homes?

If you’re looking for an urban feel far from traffic and with a small-town atmosphere and unique amenities, you’re in luck because Houston has an abundance of communities with quirky, trendy and fun amenities that will make you wonder why you even want to leave the neighborhood. Here are some of the coolest community amenities you’ll find in Houston’s new-home communities:

Swinging Among the Branches at Cane Island

First things first: There’s a community dog! Cane Island has a furry ambassador named Hub. The lovable pooch is just a bone’s throw away from the many activities in this master-planned community. (Also, this is not the amenity you won’t find anywhere else — see the next community.) But that’s not all.

There’s a tree-house. OK, so you can’t swing from the branches of Cane Island’s signature amenity, but you can watch movies or concerts from the multi-level structure. Downstairs, there’s a café where you can grab a latte with neighbors. And, if you have a special event coming up, ask about the community’s conservatory, a greenhouse-like structure with living walls and hanging plants. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the community views through the wall-to-wall glass windows.

Learn with Us at Meridiana

Lap pool? Check. Furry community ambassador? Check. (Soliel is just as lovable as Hub!) Fishing pier and boat launch? Yasss. So, what makes Meridiana a standout? This master-planned community takes it a step further when it comes to providing kids (and adults) a place to soak up knowledge with its learning labs.

Residents can take advantage of the community’s science, wildlife and agriculture learning labs. According to the community’s site, “subjects will range from water and agriculture to solar to weather.” It’s apparent that the community’s designers have a strong interest in science — each building in the Amenity Village is aligned with solstice lines.

For example, the 60-foot Meridian Tower is a solar observatory that shows a sunspot that “crosses the meridian line at local solar noon.” In Galileo’s Lab, residents can enjoy a planetarium, telescopes, rocket landing sites, outdoor classrooms and more. The Skymap is just that, allowing kids to see the motion of the sun throughout the year. A textbook and website are in the works to help residents understand the scientific terms used in this lab. The community’s Connectivity Lab will connect the three above-mentioned labs with state-of-the-art technology.

Grow Your Heart Out at Harvest Green

Harvest Green is a community ripe with beautiful homes that boast all of the latest design styles. The homes are even built to meet the International Residential Code’s minimum wind speed requirements and has a pest control system that means materials are applied directly into walls to ensure you and your family are safe from exposure. Let’s just say, the developers of Harvest Green have put care into their homes.

But, there’s something else developers thought of: the community is the first agrihood in Houston. That means residents have an on-site farm and “ready-to-grow backyards.” In addition to the community rec center, dubbed The Farmhouse,” the community has a fitness center and patio, splash pad, amphitheater and more. But, at the heart of Harvest Green is the farm. The farm encourages residents to grow their own food and to create healthful meals using their bounty. There are also culinary classes and hosted farm-to-table dinners for residents to enjoy. Victory garden, here we come!

Ski at Towne Lake

Many of Houston’s master-planned communities feature water amenities, but at Towne Lake, you can go skiing — slalom water skiing! A 300-acre private recreational lake is the center of life at Town Lake. There’s 14 miles of shoreline, which means that’s lots of water space to enjoy boating, swimming and more.

Residents take advantage of the lake life, as well as the community’s waterpark that has a sandy beach, water slides and a lazy river. There’s also a boardwalk, where you can eat, shop or work, all right by the lake. But the key to making this community unique is the slalom skiing course, where you can catch some air with family, friends and neighbors.

Caribbean Dreaming at Balmoral

Picture it: an island breeze blows through your hair as your wade in crystal clear waters on a beautiful white sand beach. Now imagine that you never had to leave the state of Texas to enjoy this Caribbean-dream lifestyle. Make this dream a reality by living in Balmoral, Texas’ first master-planned community with a lagoon.

Resort living doesn’t get any better: cabana seating, sailing, paddling, kayaking, swimming, sand volleyball and easy access to the best Houston has to offer, including downtown Houston. Homes in this master-planned community come at all price points, which means you don’t have to be a millionaire to have access to this water-based neighborhood.
