Coastal Meets Country: Tour a Southern Living Showcase Home, Part One

A room within a house, with walls designed and decorated with a wide range of decor items that blend together into a fabulous-looking space.

A two-story limestone fireplace and the use of white throughout this living room in the Southern Living Showcase Home in Lago Vista, Texas, create an open, inviting space for entertaining.

Designing and building your dream home is one of the most rewarding things you could do in your life.

Designing and customizing a home for someone else? It’s just as rewarding, but perhaps a bit more challenging.

For Silverton Custom Homes interior designer Linda Grimm, the challenge is letting go. “I’ve designed so many homes that I thought were going to be ours,” she says with a laugh. “And then (my husband) tells me that we’re going to be selling it. Years later, some of our clients still say, ‘It’s your home, Linda. We can see you all over the place.’ ”

Together, Linda and husband Mike Grimm have built hundreds of lake-community homes with Silverton Custom Homes, based out of Jonestown, Texas. Their daughter, Lisa Grimm Willeford, is part of Silverton’s design team, while their son, Jason Grimm, is on the sales team. Son-in-law Chris Willeford serves as the company’s construction superintendent. The family-run company has been recognized by the Southern Living Custom Builder Program — of which Silverton is a member — as its 2013 Custom Builder of the Year.

So, it’s fair to say that Mike, Linda and the Silverton team know their stuff. With that said, NewHomeSource recently filmed a 2013 Southern Living Showcase Home in Lago Vista, Texas, near Austin, that was built by Silverton to bring you the latest in new home design. Aside from giving you a peek into the gorgeous, lakeside home, Linda and Mike reveal just what was behind their design choices.

Silverton’s specialty, Mike says, is building homes that seamlessly blend into the landscape and mixing new with old. The Lago Vista Southern Living Showcase Home is no exception.

In Episode 1 (below) of our Southern Living Showcase Home tour, Mike explains how thinking outside of the box allowed him to create a rustic look for the modern, lakeside home. “We really like an old feel to homes, so we combined elements that look old, but are new,” he says. “The faux-cedar shakes make it look like this house was here forever.” He also discusses some of the home’s energy efficiency features, including wiring for future solar panels.

While Linda jokes that her “homes” have been sold time and time again, she is serious about creating timeless, tasteful looks in each home. At the same time, Linda aims to design a home that is both beautiful and functional. In Episode 2 (also below), Linda describes how she managed to create a country-meets-coastal look to the home. She also discusses how to use natural lighting to define a space.
