Delaware County is located in central Ohio and is part of the Columbus metro area. Columbus is the state's capital and the largest city in the state. The county was formed in 1808 and named for the Delaware Indian tribe. Although a portion of Columbus is inside Delaware's county limits, The City of Delaware, also the county seat, is the largest within its borders.
Founded in 1808, the City of Delaware is approximately 30 miles north of Columbus. The city overlooks the Olentangy River and often makes the list of the best places to live in the United States. It offers a vibrant downtown with rich history, arts and cultures, and many shopping and dining opportunities. Delaware's historic Northwest Neighborhood is a National Historic District with more than 500 historic structures.
Delaware is also known for "Little Brown Jug," one of the premier races in the harness-racing triple crown, which draws more than fifty thousand people to the Delaware County Fair, where it is held, each year. Former President Rutherford B. Hayes was born and raised in the county, and it is also home to Ohio Wesleyan University and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.
Delaware County often lands on the lists of the highest-income counties in the United States. Access to many opportunities in Delaware, Columbus, Dublin, Powell, and Westerville, make the county an increasingly popular choice for families. It is a great place to live, work, and raise a family. There are 96 new home communities throughout Delaware County and many others in and around Morrow, Franklin, and Union counties.
