Farming, particularly dairy farming, is a major industry here and the main income source for many residents of Iredell County. However, continued residential and commercial development has threatened the industry, mostly in the southern part of the county. Iredell County continues to experience rapid population growth and increased suburbanization due to the draw of nearby Lake Norman and the City of Charlotte. The northern part of the county continues to retain its rural character.

In Statesville, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Fort Dobbs State Historic Site offers a window into the Seven Years War (1754-1763), the first global conflict in history and the area’s link to the war. Iredell Museums is located there, too, offering inspiration and education to county residents. Lake Norman State Park near Troutman offers year-round recreation opportunities, including camping, swimming, water skiing, fishing, and boating.
