East-central Pennsylvania, along I-78, 20 miles west of the New Jersey border, is home to a mid-sized city complex. Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton all have a significant industrial and working-class history, which is anchored by the massive Bethlehem Steelworks. The massive 500-acre mill complex, which was abandoned 20 years ago but remains a towering presence just south of downtown Bethlehem, is expected to morph into a conserved national park site reflecting our industrial past, at least in part. The rest of the area is primarily a hub for the old-economy industry, with Lucent Technologies spinoff Agere providing a sliver of high-tech. Binney & Smith, the maker of Crayola crayons, operates a plant in Easton, which is located east of the Lehigh River.
