Boonton is a small town covering just 2.49 square miles in Morris County, NJ. Originally the site of an 18th Century settlement named "Boone-Towne" in honor of the Colonial Governor Thomas Boone, it later became Boonton in 1866, within portions of Hanover and Pequannock Townships. The town became fully independent in 1867.

The area began to flourish around 1829 following the construction of the Morris Canal and the formation of the New Jersey Iron Company.
