Living in Reading, PA

Reading is a city in and the county seat of Berks County, in Pennsylvania. It is the fourth largest city in the state and sits approximately halfway between the state’s most populated city, Philadelphia, and the state capitol, Harrisburg. It sits along a major transportation route between Central to Eastern Pennsylvania and is best known for the now-defunct Reading Railroad, made famous by the board game, Monopoly. The railroad was once of great importance as the transporter of coal from the Pennsylvania Coal Region to the eastern United States via the Port of Philadelphia.

Reading is also known as the “Pretzel City,” because of numerous local pretzel bakeries, some of which are world-famous, including Bachman, Dieffenbach, Tom Sturgis, and Unique Pretzel. It is also a popular destination for cyclists because it sports more than 125 miles of bike trails across five major preserves.

The Reading Public Museum exhibits an Egyptian mummy among works by Degas and other famous artists. It also includes a planetarium and arboretum. Reading is also home to the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum which displays vintage and military aircraft.
