After returning from active duty in the Pacific Theater during WW II, J. C. Kendrick struggled to find his place in society. Having few skills at age 22, he began as a carpenters helper in California in 1946. By the early 1950s, he had elevated his position to Master Carpenter and took his talents back home to Oklahoma where, in 1956, he started a company then known as Kendrick Builders. In 1966, J. C., his family and Kendrick Builders moved to Columbia SC, where they rose quickly to become noted as one of Columbias premier builders for the next 30 years. Dennis Kendrick began working for his father at the young age of 9 and by the age of 18, Dennis was no longer working for J. C., but with him. At age 19, Dennis built the first of his many homes to come. He incorporated Kendrick Builders in 1981 and, upon his fathers retirement, changed the company name to the Kendrick Company, Inc. as it remains to this day.
