If you’re considering working with Highland Homes and their preferred lender—don’t. This has been one of the most frustrating and disappointing experiences of my life, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. They had our loan documents for months, and every time they asked for updated paperwork, we responded immediately. And to be clear—none of the delays were due to issues with our approval or finances. We were fully qualified. The only thing standing in the way was their incompetence. Somehow, our paperwork still “got lost in the shuffle.” One week before closing, they casually informed us the deal would need to be postponed because they still hadn’t sent the documents to the VA. That delay? It cost us another 39 days, forced my family into temporary housing, and added an incredible amount of stress to what should have been an exciting time. Throughout this nightmare, there was a constant game of blame ping-pong. No accountability. No urgency. Just a whole lot of “not my department.” And if that wasn’t enough—now that we’ve been in the house for nearly two months, we still can’t receive mail. Why? Because the developer forgot to install mailboxes on our street. You read that right: mailboxes. Gone. Missing. Never installed. Despite repeated visits to the post office and escalating the issue, Highland Homes has done absolutely nothing to resolve it. Just more deflection, delay, and disinterest. When you spend $1.2 million, you expect a minimum level of competence and customer service. What we got was a masterclass in how not to take care of your buyers. This is my first time purchasing a new build so I have nothing to compare my experiences to. This was a forced move for work so not a lot of time to shop around. Highland came highly recommend from my realtor. I looked at 2 Highland homes and on its face I really like them. Completed my "blue tape" walk through (took a vacation day and drove 10 hrs total) where I marked things that needed repaired before closing. I attempted to go over things with a fine toothed comb but it's a lot to look at in a short amount of time. I came back the next week for closing and was assured by the builder all of my stuff was repaired. I arrive at the house and noticed 90% of the things I marked were not fixed, though the blue tape was now removed. I was not a happy camper. What other things did they cover up? I made my concerns known and a few of the bosses arrived and began helping fix items. They assured me multiple people had walked through my house several times, but they must've walked through with their eyes closed to miss all the glaring issues. Things ranged from screws in the door hinges not screwed in, paint splatter all over the laminate flooring, trim not complete nor painted, grout all over the tile, laminate damaged, outlets not installed correctly, and sink leaking (though i was told it was fixed already, yet under the cabinet was still wet). Yes they are willing to fix it. Thankfully you get a bumper to bumper warranty for the first year because you'll need it. After a week of being in the home 5 tiles cracked in the bathroom and a warranty claim was made. Thoroughly walk through every single nook and cranny of your house as the walk through they push so fast as if they know things are missed. I have mortar missing at the top of my brick that connects to the roof that the builder should have caught not me. I find it very difficult to understand how the house next to me doesn’t have that issue but mine does and they use the same contractors. They don’t do caulking after you sign off on the house. Electrical voltage issues with the doorbells are a known issue and they are aware but not giving grade a transformers to fix the issue where it seems to be a monthly problem and it’s only been two and half months in the home. Make sure the wood is nailed down properly if you have upstairs otherwise you’ll be screwed. Not sure why so many issues that I have to call out if the project manager and his boss should be doing a detailed walk through before you do as they inform you. I wanted to love this house and used this builder because I thought they were better at everything compared to my previous builder but sad to say my previous house seems like it was built with better quality materials. I shouldn’t be able to sit in the master toilet and hear in the room next to me let alone have a conversation with the person in that room that can be heard clearly through the walls. A crack found on my secondary bathroom tile and it was pointed out for replacement of the tile instead they sent someone to put some paint or material that’s cheap on it that came up within 3 weeks of it being put down. The flood lights don’t get them, they are cheap for the price you pay you can get better quality getting a ring one on your own. I have to hire pest control to get rid of wasps that got in my attic/ roof of the house due to missing mortar in the front and sides of my house that connects to the wood because it was left open which I had to seal the front however cannot do the rest of the house as it requires a large ladder so now after being here 2 and a half months I have to come out of pocket to fix. Do better if you claim to be America’s best builder. I hope you rectify the issues with the doorbells and the mortar missing around the top of the house. Outside of this the house looks nice however with small mortar missing around the top of the house I’m nervous what the house will look and feel like in 2-5 years. Proceed with caution and if you can make sure you and your realtor come out every week to do a detailed walk through. I did but didn’t have the realtor do it and pointed out what I could when I wasn’t rushed by them talking nice and educating but moving swiftly ends up in lack of love for what you pay an arm / leg for when it’s not fixed within the first year. Building a home is often a dream come true, filled with anticipation and excitement. Unfortunately, our experience with Highland Homes has been more of a cautionary tale, underscored by significant disappointment in both the quality of materials, craftsmanship and the responsiveness of their team. From the onset, we were drawn to Highland Homes by their seemingly stellar reputation and the promise of quality and engagement. However, as the project progressed, it became increasingly clear that our expectations would not be met and we were just a number in their budget. Our journey, which should have been paved with professionalism and precision, was instead marred by delays and oversight in the interest of profitability. One of the most glaring issues we are still facing is the incomplete state of our home nearly two months after closing. Please, DO NOT close on your home if it is not perfect to you! The moment you close, all urgency and responsiveness will dissipate. It is profoundly disheartening to report that major components, such as our front doors, are still missing despite having been chosen roughly one year ago in the design center. This oversight, one of dozens leaves a sour taste in what should be a celebratory new chapter in our lives. Attempts to resolve these issues have been met with a concerning lack of urgency and indifference. The responsiveness of the Highland Homes team has been less than satisfactory, leaving us in a state of limbo. The communication gaps and delayed responses have only exacerbated our frustrations, making it difficult to trust their commitment to customer satisfaction. While there are aspects of the home that reflect the quality Highland Homes is known for, these are overshadowed by the significant shortcomings in both delivery and service. It is unfortunate that our experience does not align with the high standards they advertise. Speaking with neighbors who had also chosen Highland Homes, our experience unfortunately appears to be the norm in Mustang Lakes. I wish we would have walked around the neighborhood and spoken to people before making such a significant commitment. In transparency, our realtor strongly favored Highland Homes but we have also learned that is likely due to their extremely generous realtor program rather than an unbiased recommendation. Highland Homes has the potential to deliver beautiful homes, our experience suggests that they fall short in key areas of execution and customer care. We hope that sharing our story will encourage the company to reflect on their processes and improve for the sake of future homeowners. For prospective buyers, we recommend proceeding with caution and a readiness to advocate strongly for your expectations. How common is Jonathan for a name? Prior construction supervisor normalizes and minimizes complaints, (chipped bricks/defaced bricks are normal, there are plenty of leftover bricks, sub-contractors should have installed those "perfect ones", "normal for stairs to squeak" inspite of adding more screws on stair steps, guy who supposedly repaired the squeaks would pass for principal danseur as he carefully descended down the stairs to minimize the squeaks, he is a little bit stocky with matching attitude lol, he could only blame the framer for the squeaks, uneven wood stain application, rough door jams, uneven flashing, uneven sodding, construction manager does not check work of individual sub-contractors, how do you miss a window on the third bathroom (upstairs). Blame game among subcontractors, lackluster painting subcontractors (a lot smudge bricks that needed to be changed after closing. Construction manager prohibited use of flashlights to check on imperfections during walk throughs. buyer should be offered to upgrade sidings to brick or stucco instead of hardies, builder should have flexibility regarding orientation, right swing or left swing, driveway ended up directly across the opposite driveway. all showers areas should be recessed. there was a rush to close on a house despite multiplicity of items that needed to be done, closing was done and no window in the bathroom, how? Construction supervisor asked for 5 stars lol, his efforts are not worth for 5 stars, at the same he brags about his texas A&M school, and he got "promoted" or just transferred, woooow. don't worry this will not go online to make him famous. Same plan, same builder, different prices in different communities, different level of standard features in each community should be conveyed to multiple layers of subcontractors. building the same plan in the same community, different placement of vents/exhaust, not sure if the architect/engineer drew it differently lol, some items needed to be discussed during pre-construction meeting. so much inconvenience imposed on the buyer waiting for repairmen, are you gonna give me a pergola, epoxy garage floor, skylight or hotel stay for free while repair work is being done? ... We had bad experience with Highland builder. It seemed that they don’t care much about quality of workmanship. A lot of issues were found before and after moving in. Very slow progress when resolved an issue. Satisfaction still not meet for some issues such as lot of stains on driveways and garage, front and backyard weren’t level properly, damage and lack of grass for yards, outside walls and entryway has lot of pant and grout spills

Continuous struggle through the whole process

Construction quality is not up to the mark. Not sure if they actually do those quality checks they say they so. You find several problems after their quality check. There were several items being worked on even after closing and have several issues still bein worked on which were reported. It also seems they treat customers differently, some get good attention and some don't. Cleanliness is not their thing... They feel some dirty items are ok when they hand over the home. They own lender company will put you on a higher interest rate even when you give counter offer you received from others. In my case the difference was 1 full percentage. They know you will still close with them for the 'incentive' and easiness of the process as they want you of delays if you go with other lender. ... More

I am writing to you as a very concerned homebuyer. We recently built a house in Jordan Ranch with Highland Homes. While we expected the home buying process to be difficult, we have had quite an unpleasant experience with Highland Homes. From the get-go, there has been significant miscommunication and quality control issues. There have been many emails sent to our salesperson, our contractor and our project manager regarding issues, most recently being the unfinished nature of the house even after closing. There were multiple issues that were to be resolved before closing but were not. All of them are in writing, either through text message or email. These examples can be provided if necessary. We were assured at closing that these items would be completed the following week as we had let our salesperson and contractor know that we would be moving in approximately 2 weeks from signing our closing documents. The following week came, and the items were not completed. The next week came, and even after reminding everyone that we would be moving in later that week, the items were still not completed. We have now been here for about 4 weeks and the items have not all been completed, and we are finding more problems around the house - door knobs not being tightened appropriately and falling off, paint splatter, light bulb covers falling from the ceiling are just to name a few. My wife is at the end of her pregnancy and instead of being able to unpack our boxes and get the house ready for the baby, she is babysitting tradesmen and cleaning up after them as they come and go. She stayed home for the whole day on Friday 6/7, 6/14, and 6/21. We have to put a hard stop on anymore major repairs on the house because we need to get the house prepared for the baby. This was discussed with our contractor. On Saturday 6/8, painters were supposed to arrive at 7am and finish their job. I woke up and waited for them. No one showed up, and we were not notified until 9-10am. Things happen but this is the most recent incident of disrespect for our time and frankly this has happened way too much. I then had to stay at home for multiple hours on Sunday 6/9 while the painter came to complete his work. I am extremely tired and frustrated with the poor communication, the lack of professionalism, and lack of attention to detail with our housing project. I do appreciate Chuck coming to our house on Thursday 6/6 to evaluate our concerns. But the fact that everything was not finished on Friday and the painters did not show up the following day are just icing on the cake. Because of the cost of our time, the inability to unpack our things, the lack of professionalism, and poor communication, I would like to be reimbursed by Highland Homes. With everything that has gone on throughout the build and most recently, I think that 2 months’ worth of mortgage payments is fair. I do not believe this is asking too much and am happy to chat about it further. At this time, I cannot recommend Highland Homes as a builder to anyone that inquires. Our house cost us over $725,000, but I do not feel that the craftsmanship, communication, and professionalism was up to the standards that Highland Homes claims to deliver. Not the best experience when building a new house - our builder did not respond promptly to our issues/concerns, and he became defensive when we pointed out issues and/or concerns. We are moved in and continue to deal with issues that should have been resolved prior to closing.

My experience hasn’t been good. I choose Highland because of their reputation, however they have NOT stood up to their name. There has been many errors and oversights throughout the entire process from incorrect ceiling heights, bathroom flooding, missing lights, texturing, painting etc., corrects are still being made which is NOT good howbeit some major and some minor. The contractors Do Not take pride or care in their work, their craftsmanship is poor which makes for a poor quality home. Maybe the more expensive lots have better builders and contractors but my experience has been awful. Craftsmanship is poor. Quality of build is poor. Contractors are sloppy, framing not straight or flush and bowed requiring heavy warranty work. Walls not fully painted even after final walk through. Flooring scratched. Highland homes full of excuses; example two cabinet drawers touch when fully opened and the response provided was “both drawers shouldn’t be open together”. Unacceptable excuses to get the job completed correctly.

Highland homes overall construction is better than many builders but the experience we had was not the best. Cannot trust - they did not allow same garage door color for us since 2 houses from us had same color but allowed exact same floor plan as us next door ! And not only that this next door and their next door has same garage color and same white painted brick ! We had to struggle to get things right during construction process. Post closing also noticing that last minute stuff was all done like patches.

overall supervision of the trades was weak. many mistakes were made and not caught or addressed in a timely manner resulting in very poor fixes made late in the process. overall fit and finish of the home is poor. home was started months later than expected and process took longer than it should have. we are still in the process of having items repaired/finished months after closing. I am being left to manage the trades. I would not recommend Highland homes to other buyers

My fourth home build - and my worst. The quality of the workmanship is very poor.

A LOT of lip service and passing the buck. Contractor blames the builder and visa versa. It’s been two months and still waiting for issues to be resolved. I firmly believe if my original sales person would not have left the WHOLE process would have been different and I would have had a positive experience. Mark leaving was a HUGE disservice to Highland homes. On a positive note, The people in the neighborhood are wonderful and I am sure I will be happier when I hire my own competent people to complete the work correctly and not do a Mickey Mouse job.

The experience overall was very stressful, and it didn’t need to be. There was a lack of communication; questions never answered, problems not addressed in a timely fashion that would have saved Highland time and money, and would have given us an enjoyable experience. The quality of materials used and craftsmanship of the installation of the materials was mostly poor. Very disappointing in such careless, lack of pride for their trade and other trades. Most tradesmen didn’t know their craft. Nor did they respect the home of the future buyer or us the buyer. An example would be wood trim and cabinetry warped, still finding counter top dings (that is now not covered in warranty), uneven walls, and not all the warped wood was removed and replaced. I would tell a new buyer to document everything, take lots of pictures, hire your own inspector before close and before your year is up while you are still in warranty. Very unsatisfied with the responsiveness of our contractor at Veramendi location. Many of the same issues were brought up multiple times with clear communication on our end regarding quality of workmanship and incomplete work. The contractor would make excuses and often times would not even be aware that the various tradesmen never showed up to complete work. Disappointed to see on our final walkthrough that several of these issues still remained unresolved. Weeks after moving in we are still trying to complete the list and take time off from our busy schedules to be available for the work to be completed or re-done correctly. Frustrating. ... More

We had our walk through on 2 separate occasions and none of the items they were supposed to fix were complete. We lived in the house for a week before they replaced the broken dishwasher that we pointed out to them a month prior to close. We still have patchy paint on the walls and poor texture. My husband had to go all the way up the corporate chain to get any acknowledgement from the project manager.

At time of Final walkthrough there were +30 line items of things that needed to be done(e.g. All tile needed caulking, baseboards needed to be painted, melted outlets, chipped tiles, pantry shelves without supports) We pushed our closing date back for Highland to work on the house and we were told everything would be ready before the new closing date. We have spent the last 4 months taking off work to be at the house for contractors to FINISH our home... The builder I worked with was very unresponsive and never proactive. 2 of his superiors got involved and it always came across as if they just wanted to try defend the Highland Reputation instead of taking care of the customer buying the house. Maybe I had too much expectations with highland home. I had so much issues that needed to be redone like the driveway painting the cabinets I have installed has a huge gap and they are telling that is how it will stay. Now I have drainage issue. For a new house the issues are just a lot.

Kept getting pressured to use preferred lender… My construction manager has came in and fixed the issues in a very timely manner but there’s just a lot of poor craftsmanship in the house and you would think buying a half a million home your cabinets wouldn’t be crooked you wouldn’t have holes in your closet your door would actually lock etc. etc.

Sellers provided false information along the process and would not honor their word despite have pictures, emails and texts to prove what they said. It is almost impossible to contact people local and at corporate to have issues addressed.

The more time I spend here the more issues I find with the home. It is quite obvious that the builders go as fast as possible without attention to detail, resulting in imperfections throughout the home. One issue for example is that I find dried up paint on the carpet or flooring throughout the entire home. I have been slowly trying to fix this but it's an issue that shouldn't be there in the first place.

Not the best experience buying this spec home in 12/21. Transaction was rushed, 3 weeks from contract to close. But after we closed, it seemed like everyone vanished. Sure, Highland sold their home and got their money but what about the after sale support? Warranty repairs weren't responded to in a timely manner...there wasn't much I liked about the entire process or the Company at the time. After about 6 months though, our home was assigned to a new warranty manager, Corey, who was awesome. He was instrumental in getting our warranty requests completed. He was a positive light in this transaction. We've since moved into another Highland Home and that entire process was awesome. It completely changed my view of this company. ... More
