The house seems like it was rushed to meet our closing date, which we could have easily pushed back. Details such as internet availability was vague and misguided. Still don't have internet after nearly 2 months. Sales consultant seemed clueless about the tree removal behind house. Paint work is sub par. Floor is unlevel in several places throughout the house. Drainage around the house seems to be an after thought. Inconsistencies from house to house with same floor plan in the sections. Wrong fence per groves code installed on back fence line. Chesmar homes are building fences to code next to us. The construction manager has done a good job at meeting our needs with fixes. Seems the mentality is to build fast with disregard to fit and finish and try to fix under warranty instead of just taking the time to get it right the first time. We love our house and neighborhood, but there is a lot of room for improvement. ... More

Bricks uneven and mortar not installed correctly. The brick layer came back once to correct it and made it worst and use the wrong color mortar. The drainage in not slopped correctly and water sits in the backyard. The warranty representative suggestive that I purchase grass that will grow in damp areas. Sprinkler system not zoned correctly. I had to turn off half the sprinklers in order to water some of the grass that was replaced. If not then the area that does not drain water accumulates and just sit there longer then 48 hours. ... Our house had no heat or AC for the first 2 weeks of owning it. We found the issue on the final walkthrough but we signed a form accepting it so we wouldn't delay closing. The weather was not too bad but we still expected it to be fixed. One weekend it was going to be very cold. Nothing had been done so I submitted a warranty request on the Thursday before and it wasn't even looked at until the Monday afterwards. We put an electric heater in out infant daughter's room but it was cold in the house. When I talked to the person on Monday she told me I should have just called the contractor directly and started explaining how they don't check the warranty requests every day. Thanks, next time I wont use the warranty claim form.... Eventually they got it fixed but when I buy something brand new I expect the basic systems to function. Other issues were minor like the stair spindles being crooked, gate wouldn't close, some surfaces weren't painted that should have been. They fixed all of those but again, if I am rating quality of workmanship and materials, even a 3 is generous given our experience. Plus they need a street sweeper in the neighborhood. I understand its under construction, but they don't even try to keep the streets clean. Our cars are filthy all the time. Again, a minor annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless. ... More

The sales representatives were fantastic. We were always treated with respect and courtesy when visiting the sales/design center. Once in the house, things changed slightly. On move in day, we attempted to hook up our dryer (electric) when I was shocked due to the plug being wired incorrectly. Upon further investigation it was discovered that the plug had no ground thus allowing for electric feedback. I had to re-wire the plug correctly. Next, after a further (detailed) inspection of the house it was discovered that there are many quality related issues that in my opinion are unacceptable. The quality of he painting is quite poor and there is paint on everything (tile, wood floor, cabinets, etc). I know for a fact that the contractors were back several times to repair issues but there still seems to be a disconnect with what quality work is expected. I know this seems petty but there are many other cosmetic/ quality craftsmanship issues that are too much to list. The final issue that effected the overall rating is the waterline to the refrigerator. On move in day we brought in our refrigerator and hooked it up to the waterline for the ice maker. After trying the water dispenser it was discovered that there was no water supply to the line and therefore this feature was unable to be used. I emailed Highland of the issue and waited nearly 1 month to hear back. Once I sent a reminder email, the contractor was called and scheduled immediately. The contractor arrived on the appointment day to check but was not able to fix the issue. Even though I thoroughly explained he issue, they still sent a technician over to see if the waterline was turned on and ensure the line was connected correctly. Once this was verified, I was told that he was not able to fix the issue since this is not a one man job. He told me that the office would call to reschedule and they would need to send over another crew to investigate. I have not burned a days vacation for a 10 minute appointment with not result. The frustrating part of the entire process is that the contractors who need to perform the repairs are only available Monday thru Friday during normal business hours. This means that the homeowner must rearrange their schedule so the poor quality craftsmanship can be repaired at the contractor convenience. Seems a little backwards from how customer service is supposed to work. I really had high expectations from Highland since we've looked at this houses before, lived in one previously, and had such a great experience with the sales team. I question whether or not I would repurchase another Highland Home and currently feel as though I would definitely not recommend them to friends and family. I truly hope this was just a one off experience but only have this experience to judge them on their customer service. Hope to hear from them soon. ... More

My home buying experience with Highland is a mixed review. From a floor plan/neighborhood perspective they have very nice floor plan options that are in very nice areas. My sales manager, Sarah T., was fantastic! She was very honest about answering questions and extremely responsive. She walked through each phase step by step. Without a doubt she was what sold me on building with highland and making my experience pleasant. I also appreciated my lending team and my design center consultant. When it came to the project mgmt/construction side - things unfortunately were not as smooth. I assume things in Covid added a layer of complexity in terms of materials and timing, but that should not have an impact on the quality and finishes on the home. When it came time for final walk throughs and closing my home was "finished" with lots of missed items which proved a lack of quality assurance (cracked windows, screws missing from glass door, damaged tile, bathroom drains filled with corrosion, messy cocking, VERY THIN flat standard paint which comes off EXTREMELY easy, etc.). Also there were A LOT of construction remnants left for me to clean and fix in a brand-new house which I feel is unacceptable (I.e. paint spots on floors, pencil markings on the tiles, base boards not flush to the end of the wall, windows not clean, dust on counters, paint/cocking all over most light switches door knobs, and more). My project mgr was responsive but I feel it was hard for my points to be fully understood and made priority. Highland makes a beautiful - I have toured several model and completed inventory homes to confidently say this. What I would say for new buyers is stay on the project mgmt side and ensure they are doing what they should be in terns of finishes. Also, if at all possible...do not close without these items being fixed. I am still having to lead that charge to finish my house I am paying for. ... More

Well if you show a model home and say you would give a customer the same exact without only one item the customer needs to hold your word for it. If the customer is paying for a premium product its not right to short change them. The fence color did not match and we were told they will fix the issue which ended up not getting fixed to date. The outside up-lights went missing and that is one of the signature aspect that made me go for the model that i bought. All similar models next to me have the and apparently when i asked i was told it was am upgrade which is not what i was told at the time i did my purchase agreement. House was supposed to be cleaned and garage pressure washed prior to our arrival that never happened. ... More

Our home is beautiful, but over priced for what you get. Highland still has not completed their final punch list of items that were to be completed prior to move in. We did not want to push our closing date as we had nowhere to go, so we went ahead and moved in. Now we have a list of unfinished items, which they promised they would come finish shortly after we moved in, but haven’t. We have reached out to the builder multiple times, no return calls, no return emails, one time he put a meeting on the calendar and we took off of work for him to no show. It’s funny how once they get their money, it’s no longer their problem anymore. Don’t get me wrong we like our home, but be prepared to chase your builder down if you want them to complete anything they “promised”. ... More

Actually disappointed with the new build construction and lack of responsiveness with our Highland home. (Quite inferior to our previous Builder home/experience). No doubt that the bones of the house are quality; however, overshadowed by the subpar craftsmanship of the internal and external finish out. Several major issues pointed out to the construction manager during the building process along with many cosmetic issues prior to closing. Unable to use our master shower upon move in and zero faith that any of our issues will now be address since the money has now been funded to Highland. Just to list a few: chunks of concrete missing on sidewalks and patio, grout lines of disarray and missing completely in some places, 2 doors damaged, backsplash tile uneven, broken marble in the master bath, drywall cracks and visible seams, and paint on tile, wooden floors and on trim. We have lost faith in Highland Homes and would not recommend them. ... More

Maybe expectations were too high. But for the amount of money spent on this house, I would have expected a MUCH higher level of craftsmanship in details. Base materials that the builder uses are lower quality (cheap doors, basic light fixtures, flimsy wood flooring, counter materials in kitchen and bathroom, little toilets, light switch locations, etc.). Maybe the "area" commanded such a price, but the end product was mildly disappointing. By the end, it was too late to correct it all. The construction manager was responsive during final walk through but not entirely reactive to make corrections. There was only so much anyone could do at that point without making the product worse. By the end you are committed, your heart is set on the location, and your mind is excited for a new home. Turning back is nearly impossible. Short of a daily inspection of contractors, how can one possibly keep up with and correct issues in real time. Everyday I find things in the house that are disappointing. Highland seller/realtor was very lovely. Neighborhood is wonderful, which some what makes up for end product. ... More

This is our second Highland Homes new build (the first was in 2012 in The Tribute.) The experience this time around was not at all the same. Overall, we like our house but only because we had to nitpick and complain about things from the day the foundation was poured. Nearly every surface in our house had an issue that we had to manage the builder on. We did have some resolution on certain issues, but overall, the quality of this build and the experience was not what we envisioned. We will probably build another house again in the next few years and will most likely not consider Highland. Also, we are very disappointed that even after our negative survey we filled out at closing to discuss these issues (closing date was October 4) not one person from the Highland Homes corporate sales office has reached out to us for feedback. They clearly do not care or value the information on these surveys. ... More

Don’t sign your closing docs until the builder fixes everything! It has taken me over 2 months to get everything fixed the right way and stay on the painters!! The builder has been very responsive about getting back to me but they are so busy building so many houses, their attention to detail from the contractors is not always good. We had to get the the patio and a portion of the driveway“floated” as there was acid/grease stains from the sub contractors, the painters (pretty sure the first painters were fired) had to come at least 5 times to fix things, and there were some finer details in the kitchen that were left unfinished/not painted. If you’re considering purchasing a Highland Home, I hope you’re reading this review in time to change your mind. In fairness, we purchased our home in Sienna Plantation and our neighbors have similar complaints, but we know others who own Highland Homes in other communities and are satisfied with their purchase. From start to finish, but especially at the finish, Highland was less than impressive. From our salesman giving us incorrect information to our home not matching the elevation we agreed to and ending with very poor craftsmanship, this house is nothing but a headache. I wish I could include pictures to show you, but here are some examples: multiple fans wobbled upon move in and had to be serviced multiple times, there are paint drips and smudges everywhere, paint splatter dots all over the floors, caulk all over the place, many, many, many cracks and openings in the trim and floor including a hole in the wall that was concealed by a support leg for our counter top, tile floor was installed with too shallow grout and had to be redone, shower floor was installed with very inconsistent spacing between tiles and and had to be redone, instead of cutting small pieces of tile to fit into the corners of our master bath, the installer filled those corners with big swipes of grout, grout and black wash from the tile installation is smudged all over the white trim in the bathroom, tile around the tub is poorly installed, especially at the edges, cooktop was installed at an angle in the kitchen, Silestone was the promoted quartz material at the design center, but our actual brand was a no-name, despite our sale agreement specifically listing Silestone, our backyard is a sopping mess and finally, the most egregious: we have RIGIDCORE installed in the majority of our house and the entire floor needs to be replaced. This is a floating floor product and the installers did not evenly spread the float beneath the floor, causing pieces of the floor to “touch down” to the concrete below and gaps between the floor and trim. Additionally, they installed the boards too tight with no margin on the edges for expansion, so our entire floor has peaks and valleys; in the sunlight, it truly looks like it’s a wave. The corners of the boards are chipping across the entire floor because of this. Some of these issues were noted prior to move in, but some we discovered after living here for a few months. Highland fails to hold their trade partners to a high standard and the builders fail to recognize these issues independently; it’s up to you to note all these flaws. Highland promotes that they have exceptional customer service and I would agree that they are quick to respond to items outside of “warranty”, but then drag their feet to get the work done. I would personally rather have a house that doesn’t have these issues instead of spending an absorbent amount of time trying to get them fixed with “excellent customer service.” ... More

One trade builds something and the next trade breaks or damages it. It's your average built house. They could do better. ... More

I thought I was buying a decent home until i moved in. The FIRST weekend, the plumbing backs up on us!. There was a stake in one of the trees that a genius landscaper stuck so deep into the ground that it cracked the cheap pipe that was used for the plumbing. To their credit, highland homes fixed it the same day. Week later, i discovered a roof leak due to a leaky roof jack. This was fixed a few days later. Now ive realized the ac installer that highland choses for my area is one of the worst rated hvac installers in Houston. They never tested the static pressure on the ac, the coils were full of sand, several vents were installed backwards, etc. I expected far better than this considering the price of the home . ...
