Chesterfield is a city and idyllic suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, located in St. Louis County, 25 miles west of the city. It is the state’s fourteenth largest city and just a 25-minute drive to downtown St. Loius. Parts of Chesterfield are located in the floodplain of the Missouri River, now known as Chesterfield Valley, formerly known as Gumbo Flats. Present-day Chesterfield is known to have been a site of Indigenous Native American inhabitation for thousands of years. One site in western Chesterfield boasts native artwork and carvings that are believed to be nearly 4,000 years old. Another site, dated to around the year 1000, contains the remains of what is believed to be a market and ceremonial center.
