The island acts as home to the Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, and was host to early military testing of the ramjet missile program, an endeavor that used the code name Operation Bumblebee. Topsail Island is also rumored to be the final resting place of the famous Pirate Blackbeard's hidden treasure.
