Mokena

Mokena is a rapidly growing community in the region, largely due to its proximity to the Rock Island Railroad. The village was founded around 1851 and grew quickly as lots were sold for $100 each. Today, Mokena has a population of more than 18,000 and is considered one of the fastest-growing communities in the area. Mokena owes much of its growth to its close relationship with the railroad. Mokena has been working to restore its historic downtown area, encouraging merchants to participate in a cooperative Favßade and Signage grant program. The goal of the program is to create an early 1900s theme throughout the village, making it more inviting for tourists and residents alike. Through this initiative, Mokena hopes to revive its economy and attract new businesses into the community.
