HISTORY Dating back to the late 1600’s, Richland Township took its name from the fertile land that had once been cultivated by the local Indians. When William Penn acquired and started developing the land, its inhabitants called the area the “Great Swamp”, because of the wealth of waterways surrounding the area. As the community continued to take shape, roads and a town center were built by settlers of Richland Township as a place for travelers, friends and “Quakers” to meet as they made their way from Philadelphia to Allentown. The Quakertown Historical Society, Richland Historical Society, the Mercer Museum and The Richland Library Company are just a few of the wonderful resources in the area showcasing artifacts and presenting lectures with Bucks County.
