Moving is exciting, but it comes with stress. Plan accordingly to make it as smooth as possible.

Why it matters: When your new space is cluttered with boxes, movers, takeout boxes, and friends and family, the chaos feels never-ending. These steps can help you ease in and feel at home faster.

1. Pack and unpack strategically

2. Downsize as you go

  • Don’t waste space or energy on things that don’t fit your new life.

  • Create a donation pile and let go of items you won’t use.

3. Help kids and pets adjust

  • Make it easier for those that may not be able to communicate their feelings about the move.

  • Keep kids engaged with small tasks and allow them say in decorating their new space.

  • For pets, try to do a visit to new home prior to move to get familiar with surroundings.

  • Bring your pet’s favorite toys or blankets and set up their spaces quickly.

  • Maintain a positive outlook.

4. Add comfort quickly

5. Explore your neighborhood

  • Step outside. A walk, dinner out, or a visit to a nearby park helps you connect with your new community.

  • You’ve got a new neighborhood, community amenities, and people to get to know.

6. Host a gathering

  • Invite friends over before everything is picture-perfect. It helps break in the space and makes it feel like home.

  • A housewarming party is a great way to meet new neighbors.

7. Be patient

  • It takes time to settle. It doesn’t have to be picture-perfect on the first day.

  • You’ll rearrange, adjust, and slowly grow into the house. That’s part of making it yours.

Bottom line: A house becomes a home through small wins, community connections, and time.
