Moving is a major transition – not just for you, but for your whole household. The more you prep up front, the easier it is to settle in. These 10 tips will help you feel at home faster:
1. Change Your Address
Update your info with USPS, banks, insurance, utilities, credit cards, and subscriptions. Don’t forget your driver’s license and voter registration.
2. Store Important Docs
Keep closing papers, warranties, and appliance manuals in one safe, accessible spot. Be sure to keep receipts for moving expenses that may be tax deductible.
3. Set Up Security
Install a home security system if one isn’t already in place. Consider changing locks, especially if construction keys were used during the build.
4. Double-Check Repairs
Review your final walkthrough list. Confirm any unfinished items – like missing paint touchups or cracked outlet covers – are completed by your builder.
5. Learn the Home’s Systems
Be sure to ask for a home orientation to learn your home. Know where the breaker panel, water shut-off, and HVAC filters are. Learn how to use your thermostat, garage door opener, and other tech features. Save the manuals. File the paint colors and brands, carpet and flooring choices for future reference.
6. Review HOA Rules
Know what’s allowed (or not) when it comes to landscaping, paint colors, and holiday décor. Learn trash pickup schedules and parking rules.
7. Personalize the Space
Now’s the time to decorate and furnish your home the way you pictured it. Decorate your home in the manner you imagined so that you love it. The sooner it feels like yours, the more comfortable you'll be.
8. Learn the Neighborhood
Plan out the routes to and from school. Find local parks and amenities that interest you. Map out the essentials: grocery stores, hospitals, and vets. Keep emergency numbers handy.
9. Meet the Neighbors
Say hello. Attend events or join local groups. Knowing the people around you adds a layer of security – and fun.
10. Host a Housewarming
Invite friends, family, and new neighbors over. It’s a great excuse to celebrate – and build connections.
Bottom Line: Settling in takes more than unpacking. Learn your home, meet your neighbors, and make the space your own. Then relax – you’re home.
