Father’s Day gifts rarely make it past the back of the closet. But if your family is moving or building a new home, ask Dad what features matter most. Realtors say Dads often want practical spaces, fresh air, and room for hobbies.

Why it matters: A home that works for Dad means more balance, less stress, and more family time.

1. Indoor-Outdoor Living

Outdoor kitchens and living spaces that open to the backyard top Dad’s list. Dad can keep an eye on the kids while grilling. Bonus: An outdoor TV means he can also keep an eye on the game.

2. Garage Storage

The garage is still Dad’s domain, but organization matters. Buy some excellent cabinetry, storage, and hanging organization to make the most of the garage space. From tools to hobbies and home maintenance, dad will appreciate the great use of space.

3. Flex Space or Hobby Room

Dads want space to dive into hobbies or work projects. It might be the garage, but a dedicated space or man cave allows dad to work, play, and enjoy some relaxation time.

4. A Place of His Own

Whether it’s a home office, a tucked-away shed, or a private retreat, Dads need quiet space. Dads invest largely in the family, they can benefit from a little spot of their own. A gaming table, pool table, and comfortable seating means you can probably spend some quality time with dad, too!

5. Outdoor Amenities

New homes often come with excellent amenities. Bike paths, trails, golf courses, and green space are high on the list. They make it easy for Dad to stay active, spend time with family, and enjoy the outdoors without leaving the neighborhood.

Bottom line: When shopping for or designing a new home, think beyond the basics. Ask Dad what he wants, and you’ll build a home that works for the whole family.
