Kitchen Trends to Watch in 2025

Recently revealed kitchen trends for 2025 promise an exciting year ahead, as homeowners look to fine-tune kitchen design in the name of functionality and fashion-forward style. Here are some of the top kitchen trends to watch in 2025

Minimalist Kitchens

While interior decor is expected to strike a maximalist tone broadly in 2025, with bold colors, patterns, metallics and more, the kitchen is following a slightly different trendline.

Minimalist kitchens are expected to be big in 2025, not just because of the clean aesthetic, but also because of how streamlined design augments functionality with smart space planning.

Popular are multi-functional appliances. They make cooking easier and more convenient, and having one appliance that does lots of jobs, versus many appliances with single-task focus allows for extra space in the kitchen.

For many homeowners, this means using this extra space for more storage, which is a bonus.

Expect to see a lot of built-in appliances with cabinet door fronts, matching the rest of the kitchen. This design adds to the streamlined, sleek and minimalist aesthetic, with fewer visual transitions.

Built-in storage, including appliance garages, where clutter can be stored out of sight are a big component in a minimalist kitchen.

Floor plans are transitioning to incorporate work-focused spaces off of the kitchen, such as sculleries or butler pantries, keeping the main kitchen clean and clear for daily use.

Oversize Islands

The kitchen island is the darling of kitchen design and is continuing to grow both in popularity — and in size — in 2025.

Often the kitchen island is a design focal point, but this year expect to see the island prioritized as a gathering spot for the household, for dining, working, homework and simply hanging out at the end of the day.

Islands are getting larger in size, to feature built-in seating, alongside more prep areas. Trending are peninsula-style islands of varying counter heights to distinguish spaces between cooking and dining.

Islands are also getting bigger, simply so that they can offer more storage, and support electronics in the kitchen (i.e. charging ports in-island), as well as holding space for built-in appliances, such as beverage fridges.

Where space allows, design that features two islands is trending, as well.

Wellness Kitchens

Wellness design is a trend that is taking shape throughout the home, but the kitchen has a unique opportunity to address this priority.

Homeowners will be designing their kitchens in 2025 to maximize health and wellness, by looking for more refrigeration and prep space, to allow them to keep fresh ingredients, and make more dishes from scratch — a healthier choice.

Another way homeowners are looking to incorporate wellness in the kitchen is by fusing an indoor/outdoor connection. Kitchen design in new homes will favor large windows or sliding glass doors from an eating nook or dining area. This design will usher in natural light and ideally will frame views from the outside.

For those really committed to the indoor/outdoor connection, a retractable glass wall off of an open kitchen/dining area lets you seamlessly move indoors and out, enjoying the benefits of the great outdoors when the weather allows, and the mood strikes.

Homeowners are seeking appliances with built-in steam features, for healthier cooking options.

Another feature of a wellness kitchen is more space dedicated to recycling or composting, so that the health of the planet is considered alongside the health of the homeowners.

Countertop Materials Shifting from Quartz

While quartz is still one of the most popular countertop materials in North America, thanks to its sleek style, durability and relatively affordable price point, homeowners are thinking about choosing different materials as well, marking a more substantial shift in 2025.

Quartz is still expected to lead the pack, but quartzite isn’t far behind, with granite, sintered stone and marble all gaining ground to round out the top five countertop materials.

Waterfall edges will continue to be popular, as an easy way to add a layer of sophistication to your kitchen design.

Workstation Sinks

Keeping in line with the concept that multi-functional design facilitates clean, minimalist lines and improves functionality, the kitchen sink is getting a task-focused makeover.

The workstation sink, with integrated ledges upon which to place a cutting board, drying racks, strainers and other built-in accessories, is becoming the one-stop kitchen shop for food prep and kitchen cleanup.

When not in use, a simple cutting board or sink cover, made from similar material to surrounding countertop supports a cohesive aesthetic in the kitchen.

Kitchen Zones

Defining zones is a strategy that has been used for years in an open-concept floor plan to make space more functional, and the same theory is going to gain traction in 2025 in the kitchen, as homeowners look to use their kitchens for multiple activities, including work/live/play/school, some of which may be going on simultaneously.

Beyond the traditional kitchen triangle zone, which is the typical cornerstone of functional kitchen design, where the stove, fridge and sink are within minimal steps of each other, kitchen design will comprise additional zones, including area dedicated to consumables (food storage: refrigeration and pantry), non-consumables (plates, dishes, etc.), cleaning (sink, garbage), prep, cooking and leisure (seating and/or dining area).

Beautiful Backsplash

Continuing on the trend of bringing color back to the kitchen that characterized 2024 kitchen trends, kitchens will be colorful this year again, with much of the attention centering on backsplash.

Statement-making backsplash will feature bright colors, rich textures and intricate patterns to create wow-factor accents.

We will see tile in unexpected places, such as an accent on the knee space under an island.

Statement Range Hoods

Custom statement range hoods will continue to be big in 2025, with a variety of shapes and sizes featured in kitchens across the country.

Range hoods are ultimately a functional aspect of the kitchen, to remove odors and grease while cooking, but they represent a unique opportunity for self-expression in a very prominent way.

Trending materials include plaster, terracotta, and mixed metals to create a truly luxe focal point with a statement range hood.
