Welcome to the home of the blues. This city on the Mississippi River has more soul than you can shake a stick at, but the downside is that you may not know where to start. Start at Sun Studio, where Johnny Cash, Elvis, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis recorded before they hit it big. Because the folks at Sun Studio know why you're here, they even offer a free shuttle service to the Rock N Soul Museum and to Graceland. You don't need a shuttle to walk the length of Beale Street, however, recognized as a National Historic Landmark for its many contributions to American music. As interesting as it is during the day, Beale Street rocks even harder after dark, so better call ahead for that cab, because you'll need it later that night.

Other stops on the blues tour include Stax Records, which produced Booker T. and the M.G.'s, Otis Redding, and Isaac Hayes, and Ardent Records, where Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, and the Allman Brothers have all recorded. But don't limit yourself to the big record companies and landmarks-- blaze a trail to your own! Lots of music and blues halls aren't on the beaten path, and may give you a better understanding of how rock 'n' roll still lives in Memphis.

If you're wondering what there is to eat in Memphis, well... the fact that this city is the home of the World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest says it all. The famous Rendezvous, located downtown, is easy to find and when lean dry ribs are on the menu, that's important. Tops BBQ has many locations throughout the city, and tends to be a more local-oriented place than the frequently star-studded Rendezvous.

Living in Memphis, you'll attract more than your fair share of relatives and would-be friends who want to experience what the city has to offer. If you need to put up a curious friend or two for a weekend, to save yourself the trouble of constant entertaining, you couldn't do better than the Peabody Hotel. This Memphis original is known for the bizarre twice-a-day spectacle of mallard ducks emerging from the fountain in its lobby.

While it's fun to see the city where rock 'n' roll was born, it's even better to understand the history behind it all. The story of Memphis music is a story of the movement of an entire group of people-- often Mississippi sharecroppers-- who came up Highway 61 along the Mississippi River in search of greater opportunity. Today you may find yourself doing the same thing. FedEx (started here in town) AutoZone, and International Paper are all Memphis natives too.
