Reno is more-- much more-- than casinos. It's the self-proclaimed "Biggest Little City in the World," and there's a lot of variety to be found within and without its city limits. That said, you probably won't be able to resist the temptation to check out one of the Reno Strip's huge, gleaming casinos. The Atlantis Casino Resort Spa received the Triple-A Four Diamond Award, which might be a good enough excuse to head on over there and try your luck-- or simply admire the hotel against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Peppermill Resort Spa and Casino is also worth a look. Gambling may not be your cup of tea, but it's just not Reno without a little bit of flash and chrome. You owe it to yourself to discover the National Automobile Museum. Here, there are 224 of the finest specimens of automobile you've laid eyes on-- many of which date to before World War II, and some of which are the only vehicle of their kind!
In truth, Reno should be considered as more of an arts destination. Just a visit to the Reno Arts District downtown should settle that in your mind. The area has a high concentration of artists per capita. The good news, if you're not an artist, is that there's more for you to enjoy! The Artists' Co-op Gallery will give you a good introduction to the local scene, with the work of 38 artists who hail from Reno. The Stremmel Gallery focuses on contemporary art, and the Blue Corn Gallery specializes in Zuni and Hopi art.
In Reno you're next door to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, with all that implies. This is a gorgeous part of the country. You'll discover that as soon as you stroll downtown along the Truckee Riverwalk, and see views of the river and the surrounding mountains. As for the weather, it complements the scenery. It can get hot during the day, but it quickly cools off at night, leaving your evenings free for attending cultural events, going out to dinner, or just inviting over a few friends. Lake Tahoe is California and Nevada's ultimate vacation destination: part sun, part sand, part water, and, amazingly, part snow, it really hits the mark of everyone's idea of the perfect vacation. As a Reno resident, you'll have access to world-class swimming, boating, hiking, and skiing. You just have to take advantage of it--we hope you like the great outdoors.
The "Biggest Little City in the World" has more than a few aspects to it that might leave you scratching your head. Where else do residents take their own Reno Rodeo Cattle Drive so seriously? One of the delightful things about Reno is the constant thrill of discovery. The National Bowling Stadium should be on your list of offbeat things to do. Top it all off with a meal at the Nugget Diner. Skip the actual casino associated with this "restaurant" (quotes richly deserved)-- just visit for the greatest hamburger you've ever eaten in your life. Or so say residents. It's called the "Awful Awful." Enjoy, and perhaps plan beforehand, so you can skip eating for the next week.
