In some ways El Paso is unlike any other American city. It wears its Southwestern heritage on its sleeve, and unlike other cities in the region, isn't afraid to claim it today. The Old West never died. It moved to El Paso.

In El Paso, you'll be surrounded by the jagged landscape every day, and bathed in desert sunsets each night. Since the scenery is so ubiquitous, you'll have to explore it sooner or later. Start with a trip up the tramway to the top of Ranger Peak. This should give you a panoramic introduction to the city. You may not even leave the city before nature intrudes: the Franklin Mountain State Park is the largest park of its kind in any major US city. When you need a quick lunch-break getaway, to jog or just to clear your head, this is the obvious place.

If you do have some serious time on your hands (hours or even a whole day) there's also Carlsbad Caverns National Park and the White Sands National Monument to explore. These two parks immerse you in striking physical environments--both the famous caverns and vast stretches of white sand, respectively. El Paso's proximity to the desert of New Mexico allows you to take great vacations and discover even more of the Southwest. The only question becomes: how do you take it all in? Hiking and biking are great, but some enjoy horseback riding, in a true throwback to the Old West.

In the midst of this outdoor culture, we may be overlooking one very important sport: shopping. This is the "Boot Capital of the World." If you don't own a pair of cowboy boots yet, you soon will. And if you don't think you want a pair of cowboy boots, you're in for a surprise. Not long after you move in you'll begin coveting your neighbors', friends', and co-workers' sleek snakeskin boots. You'll develop a plan to hit up the storefronts of Justin Boots and Lucchese and JB Hill Boot Company, all among the most respected names in boot-making. You'll go on to Rocketbusters because you read the name in a magazine. That magazine would be Vogue. Of course Vogue magazine has mentioned Rocketbusters-- they had to, because the likes of Julia Roberts, Taylor Swift, Steven Spielberg, Mel Gibson, and Meg Ryan discovered it first. After you've visited these boot-makers, you'll likely have quite a wish list. However, at north of 500 dollars per pair, you want to invest in one at a time. There's always next time!

If you're beginning to suspect you'll never be bored in El Paso, you're absolutely right. The city lights up several times each year for huge, joyful street festivals like Viva! El Paso, a celebration of the cultural melting pot that is El Paso, the Downtown Street Festival, held on the Fourth of July, Shakespeare on the Rocks, which invites the Bard to the craggy skyline of the Southwest, the Fiesta de las Flores, focused on the city's Hispanic heritage, and FloraFest, which helps residents learn to cultivate their own gardens-- desert-style. That's not even the full list. Ask around, and you may learn about another festival you'd like to attend. Celebration-- even of the smallest things in life-- is a crucial part of the El Pasoan spirit.
