This is the kind of town you'd expect to see in a fifties movie starring Jimmy Stewart: an old downtown area, a Main Street, and beautiful historic homes on tree-lined streets. It also has a lively annual calendar of events, designed to introduce neighbors to one another, and to get residents to slow down and enjoy the pleasures unique to small-town America. When was the last time you had a cup of coffee with the guy who lives three doors down from you, or the mom of your kids' friends? In Laurel you'll be able to answer that question with the word "recently." The town fosters a sense of community through events like the Main Street Festival, Fourth of July and Christmas celebrations, weekly farmers' markets, and even, for the armchair "House Hunters" among us, holiday house tours. The downtown area is also the home of a number of restaurants, as well as the comedy club, Jokes On Us. Such local fixtures as Snowden Hall, Laurel High School, and the Laurel Railroad Station have roots as deep as the nineteenth century, so if you're looking for a photo op or are simply curious about old buildings, there's plenty to explore here.

This is a pretty town, and in large part because of residents' conservation efforts, such as the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. The Research Center is more accessible to scientists than everyday hikers and outdoors enthusiasts, but that doesn't mean it isn't a valuable resource. If you are looking to play outside (with or without kids) Brooklyn Bridge Road Stream Valley is your ticket. At 19 acres, it's a good bet for hours of entertainment on a sunny afternoon. The Granville Gude Park and Lakehouse is also worth a visit, with paddleboat rentals available for anyone who wants to do a little water-based exploration of the area.

It's not all history and scenery: Laurel Commons, a new mall, is in development. Don't ask us, but we hear this little development is poised to do wonders for the area shopping. In the meantime, ZAGAT-rated restaurants Pasta Plus and Red Hot and Blue are here to tide you over. Red Hot and Blue are famous for just one thing: great barbecue, and it's clear that the chefs at this joint have found their calling. Pasta Plus, on the other hand, is known for incredible Italian that packs in crowds from across the D.C. area. The area is also known for its sports bars--it's possible to create a winning combination of dives and joints for a memorable pub crawl at Sportsmen's Pub, Oliver's, Nuzback's, and Crickett's.

Don't worry-- despite the bar scene, Laurel puts family life first. Laurel High School may be well-known for its historic main building, built in 1899, but it is also noteworthy for other reasons, such as its diverse student body and excellent "Technical Academy" program. This program provides students with practical skills that will serve them well in their lives after high school.

We think you'll like life in Laurel. Let us help you find a new home that fits your new hometown--charming, affordable, homey, and practical.
