With a motto like "America's Most Historic City" residents of Fredericksburg, Virginia always seem to be a step ahead in history class, and believe me there is a lot of history to be found here. And while at one point in time the town of Fredericksburg was surrounded by armies fighting, you can be sure that modern day Fredericksburg is safe enough from battles. Fredericksburg is a charming town and is recognized by the Washington DC area for being a gateway to the south and true southern living.
History buffs will absolutely love living here. You can find historical markers starting with the Native Americans and going through the Revolutionary War, the Civil War Era and through the late 19th century to arrive at current day Fredericksburg. With several battlefields in the area, such as the Chancellorsville Battlefield, the Fredericksburg Battlefield, and the Spotsylvania Court House Battlefield, you could spend a whole weekend exploring the tactics and terrain engaged by famous Generals like Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and Joseph Hooker. Take a tour of the George Washington Ferry Farm where our first U.S. President lived as boy and where the famous "cherry tree" story supposedly took place. The Fabulous Fourth at Ferry Farms happens every year to celebrate the 4th of July with plenty of food and fun. When it rains in Fredericksburg, battlefields and other bits of history can get soggy, but have no fear the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center has its history displays always dry and they keep it interesting with revolving historical exhibits that always show relevant Fredericksburg history.
After all that history, you must be hungry! Lucky for you, Fredericksburg is full of top notch restaurants and eateries. My Place Latin Grille is a local favorite with affordable prices and excellent international fare such as the traditional Spanish dish, paella. When you live in this unique city, skip the chain coffee shops and head toward the real stuff at Hyperion Espresso. The Park Lane Tavern has had several different names in the years, but what has stayed the same is the quality British pub style with a winning fish and chips dish and a huge beer selection to wash it down. The Miller Farms Market is the local Farmer's Market where you can stock up on fresh produce and handmade products. But sometimes all you want is just a good burger and you can find that at the iconic Foode in town.
If you want to spend a day spicing up your marriage or maybe you just feel a bit whimsical, try the Great Grape Escape and explore the three local wineries: the Hartwood Winery, the Potomac Point Winery, and the Lake Anna Winery. At all three places your palate will be able to test the finest Virginia wines. The Potomac Point Winery is also home to the Live Music Fridays where you can find local musicians playing the night away while you enjoy the local vintages.
Even when you're just looking for a day in the great outdoors Fredericksburg's history follows you. Golfers have a chance to play a round of golf through Civil War landmarks, which means that they are hitting the links in the footsteps of Civil War greats like Robert E. Lee. The Civil War Paddle is a fun and educational canoe trip, perfect for summer, up the Rappahannock River with stops at several Civil War sites. And of course you can always spend the day at the Lake Anna State Park swimming, fishing and hiking the nearby trails.
