Gaithersburg, a hub of the urban design movement known as new urbanism, enjoys a reputation as an ultra-cool suburb for the well-heeled of Washington. However, this is somewhat misleading-- but only because most residents don't have to commute to downtown D.C.-- they have all they need right here. Gaithersburg residents often move here for their jobs, and it's easy to see why. The National Institute of Standards and Technology is headquartered here, and IBM, Lockheed Martin, Sodexo, and MedImmune all have offices here.
If you're the type of home buyer who puts stock in what the most influential publications in the nation have to say about your new town, take heart. Gaithersburg (pronounced with a hard "th") made the 2010 list of CNN and Money Magazine's "Best Places to Live" in the country. It also made the 2008 and 2009 shortlist of BusinessWeek's "Best Places to Raise Your Kids." In the state of Maryland alone it came in as number-one. Now, you may not be the kind of person swayed by statistics, but you have to agree: as statistics go, those numbers are hard to beat.
Gaithersburg does so well in national surveys for one reason: its great quality of life. With endless shopping, dining, and entertainment, Gaithersburg could soon eclipse D.C. as a destination. Fashionistas rejoice: one of the largest area shopping destinations, the Washingtonian Center, is right in Gaithersburg. Informally known as "the Rio," here you will find all your old standbys, like Charming Charlie, Francesca's Collections, LOFT, Torrid, and White House Black Market. For harder-to-find items, or special occasion items, there are also smaller boutiques you can browse, such as Imagine Clothing. Get in shape to wear those fabulous clothes at the Sport and Health gym, an upscale gym with so many perks you'll forget you're even working out.
This is a town that encourages creativity in all its forms. Between the Book Festival, which features intimate Q and A sessions with local authors, the exciting ONSTAGE concert series, indoor and outdoor flea markets, and the annual Young Artist Award, given to a budding Gaithersburg artist each year, this is a town that honors and nurtures the artistic spirit. Even if you don't consider yourself a gifted artist, or even a creative type, going to see the performances, art gallery openings, and book tours that pass through your hometown will never fail to inspire you.
And if you prefer being in the great outdoors to going to see an indoor art show, Gaithersburg is the city for you, too. With 23 parks, with everything from dog parks to baseball diamonds to tennis courts-- even a handball court!-- you're sure to find something that appeals to your inner weekend warrior.
New Home Source welcomes you to Gaithersburg. You're sure to find your place in this city where the Washington upper crust lives-- and we can help you get started, today.
