La Plata is a town in Charles County, Maryland, about 30 miles outside of Washington, DC, and 60 miles away from Baltimore. Since it is largely a residential community, its proximity to these mega cities of the mid-Atlantic make it an ideal choice for settling down. If you're bringing kids to the area, you'll be relieved to know that La Plata's public schools include Walter Mitchell Elementary, Mary Matula Elementary, La Plata High School, and Milton Somers Middle School, in addition to the College of Southern Maryland for higher education. A beautiful, historic Catholic convent, Mount Carmel, is just outside city limits, and makes for interesting sight-seeing. Despite being a small town, La Plata offers superior shopping facilities. In addition to a twice-weekly farmers' market, La Plata has both a WalMart and a Target, a Lowe's, and no fewer than three supermarkets.
Residents of La Plata enjoy their proximity to D.C. and Baltimore, but they can also enjoy life here without traveling too much to the area's other big cities.
