Forget, for a moment, the Mall and its famous memorials, the civics lesson you probably received in high school--and take a look at D.C. as the world-class city it has become. Like its eastern seaboard counterparts New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston, the home of the Smithsonian has a fantastic arts scene. And if you're looking for a four-star meal in the U.S., you couldn't do any better than a night out in D.C. Of course, you'll want to see the Washington Monument, the Vietnam Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial, and you'll have to take a stroll down Capitol Hill. But once you've done all your D.C. "musts," this is a city that will never stop surprising you.

You may have been to the National Gallery (and seen this hemisphere's only Da Vinci!) and eaten at the The Occidental or the Old Ebbitt Grill (and hobnobbed with politicians from both sides of the aisle) but there's so much more to explore. Check out DCEats.org for your next favorite restaurant, but we recommend you make the trip for Acadiana, Marcel's, Cafe Saint-Ex, and the numerous Vietnamese and Ethiopian (and everything else under the sun) restaurants of Adams Morgan. Off-the-beaten path in the arts is harder to find--but it's out there too. Take a closer look at the area's smaller museums, such as the Kreeger Museum, filled with Impressionist works, and the Hirshhorn Museum, home to modern and abstract works by such luminaries as Andy Warhol and Georgia O'Keefe. For more modern art, visit the Phillips Collection, the nation's first truly modern art museum.

Of course, not everything happens indoors in D.C. A wonderful year-round climate, with distinct seasons, makes a wide variety of activities not only possible, but downright fun. Start with a tour of the Great Falls National Park, a 4-mile long trail that culminates in a view of the Potomac Falls. You should also carve out a day to see the mysterious Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, with over a hundred thousand species of exotic aquatic plants such as ferns and lotuses. It makes a great date for a couple. If you're a hiker, you're in luck because the C&O Canal, Washington & Old Dominion Trail, the Mount Vernon Trail, and the Capital Crescent Trail are all a stone's throw from the Beltline.
