Homes ready for move-in in the greater Visalia area
Visalia's immediate and obvious attraction is too big to ignore. Trees. Several hundred feet high, some of them. Potentially minutes away from your new home in Visalia, all at Sequoia National Park and King's Canyon National Park. The parks can be a bit overwhelming, particularly if your previous park experience tends toward the municipal variety. There are a couple locations you can use as a stepping stone for your explorations: the cabins at Grant Grove Village let you sleep in the forest. Consider camping as well. If you're not that much of an outdoors fan, remember that you won't be alone. Several visitors' centers, the Kings Canyon Visitor Center, and the Cedar Grove Visitors Center, will show you where to go to make the most of your trip. Each visitor's center is dedicated to a different area of the forest, with its own unique topography.
Are you a hiker? You're in luck, because these vast parks--along with their majestic views--are yours to explore. Ditto if you ride horses. However, leave the car at home and prepare to lose yourself in nature-- no cars, cell phones, pagers, etc. will be necessary to experience one of America's greatest natural wonders. The trails you'll want to explore include the Crescent Meadow Loop Trail, which looks like a meadow in a Disney film, as well as more strenuous hikes like the hike up to Buena Vista Peak and Moro Rock. A few sites you should make time for along the way: the General Sherman Tree, the largest tree in the world, and the Great Western Divide, which can be seen from Moro Rock. Of course, you will discover more "must-sees" as you get to know the parks better.
But as gorgeous as Visalia is, it has more to offer than scenic vistas and great hiking trails. This is also a town with a vibrant arts community. Take the Fox Theatre, from the 1930s, as an example. This is where Depression-era Visalia residents saw a show, to forget their troubles, and it was where couples went on dates after World War II ended and Visalia girls' sweethearts came home. Now the "shows" have changed somewhat, but this is still a thriving venue. While it's not a movie theatre anymore, it makes a venue for musicians and lecturers on tour.
The College of the Sequoias and San Joaquin Valley College are both located here, adding the youthful energy typical of college students, to a town known for thousand-year-old trees. Festivals such as "Blues, Brews, and BBQ," and events such as minor league baseball games (Go Rawhides!) bring everyone together to celebrate living in Visalia. There are also many murals painted on the town's concrete walls, beautifying and coloring in downtown Visalia. Art galleries in the area serve as Visalia's other creative outlet. It's fun to stroll around downtown on a Saturday and take it all in-- the man-made vistas here might even rival the natural ones.
