If you love to be outdoors, join the club. So does every other resident of Boulder! If you live, breathe, and sleep the outdoors, if you request 'new hiking boots' or 'a mountain bike' from your family and friends each year before your birthday... you have found your tribe, and they live in Boulder, Colorado.

With so much mountain scenery, it's hard to know where to start. Where, specifically, should you hike? Is it the Flatirons? Boulder Canyon? Eldorado Canyon? All of the above. If you're willing to drive an hour, you can expand that list to include Rocky Mountain National Park, Indian Peaks, and the South Platte. Start by staying close to home, though. SmarterTravel named Eldorado Canyon in an article entitled "Ten State Parks You Can't Miss." Says it all, doesn't it? Most parks have some sort of specialty, so ask around. Visit the White Rocks Nature Preserve if your goal is to spot wildlife, including our national bird, the bald eagle. Boulder's "open space trails" are geared towards more casual hikers, with their gorgeous meadows. Some hikes offer views of the city-- which is perfect if you're the sort of hiker who needs a little urban in your rural exploration. Flagstaff Mountain is one of them. It is also the home of a nature center that offers a thorough introduction to the ecology of the area. Make sure you check the difficulty of the trail before you commit to hiking or biking it. Otherwise you'll get a crash course in just how dangerous those steep curves can be!

When you finally put down the climbing equipment, get off the bike, and take off the hiking boots, there's still plenty to do in Boulder. Since the 60s, Boulder and Longmont have been in a riot of creativity, and still are to this day. An International Fringe Festival comes to Boulder each year, encouraging artists to play with form and genre in everything from puppetry to cinema to spoken-word poetry. In Boulder there are also two symphony orchestras, a Shakespeare Festival, and a museum of contemporary art. The local University of Colorado only adds to it all with the effusive spirit of a college town. In Boulder, the rules of art were just made to be broken.

Where you will shop depends on your personality. If you're in for "just the basics," but you prefer your basics a bit upscale, Twenty-Ninth Street Mall is for you. Here you can wander from Anthropologie to the Apple Store, from Chico's to Coldwater Creek, from Macy's to MAC, Nordstrom Rack, White House Black Market, Francesca's Collections, and everything in between. If, on the other hand, your style could be described as "funky," and your battle cry is "Buy Local!" Pearl Street Mall is your mall of choice. In this "mall," farmers markets, independent bookstores, and small, ultra-hip boutiques, as well as amazing restaurants, are all under one (figurative) roof.

By now, the Boulder area sounds awesome. The question is: is this sustainable? Can one city really offer all these amazing opportunities, whether the economy is up, down, or somewhere in between? When that city's major employers include the likes of IBM, Lockheed Martin, Ball Aerospace and Technologies, Medtronic, Ericsson, Microsoft, the answer is yes. Boulder has an equally robust public sector, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
