In the oldest city in the United States, you can drink from the Fountain of Youth-- well, not quite literally. St. Augustine's own Fountain of Youth is primarily an archaeological park, and a worthwhile way to spend an afternoon, whether you're taking a drink from the legendary spring (which, by the way, will probably not make you immortal--but you never know) or attending a reenactment based on any of St. Augustine's many historical incarnations. The park is also filled with natural scenery and wildlife, including, curiously, a number of peacocks. The park allows visitors to get up close with these beautiful animals, even allowing visitors to feed the birds. All in all, a visit to the eclectic Fountain of Youth is a fitting introduction to St. Augustine, the oldest town in the country, which somehow remains perpetually young.

Although walking the famous historic district is an education in itself, if you want a closer look at the way St. Augustine has impacted American life, visit the museums! Lightner Museum and Old Florida Museum are two of the best of what the area has to offer. If you're bringing kids with you to St. Augustine, the Old Florida Museum will quickly become their new favorite place. Here they can carve a dugout canoe like the Timucua Indians, dip candles like early Florida colonists, or even help local archaeologists sift through the Florida soil for real artifacts. The former Alcazar Hotel, turned into the Lightner Museum, on the other hand, is a treasure trove for adults, who will find hundreds of antiques, drawn straight from the attics of upper-crust Floridians who lived during the state's golden age.

If you need a break from all the history, there's always the town's 43 miles of sandy, sun-kissed coastline, broken only by the Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas, two fortifications left over from St. Augustine's Spanish days. Bring your favorite beach read, or just a towel and some sunscreen, and soak up the Florida sunshine. With mild weather year-round, you won't have to worry about a cold snap or a heat wave, simply get in the car or hop on a bike-- and treat yourself to a day at the beach.

With the influence of many different cultures at work over a period of centuries, St. Augustine is a culinary paradise. Local restaurants include Harry's Seafood Bar & Grille, and the Columbia, which specializes in Old-World Spanish food. Founded in 1905 by a family of Cuban immigrants, Floridians have flocked to the Columbia for decades to eat, drink, and carouse, so prepare your taste buds for strong cocktails, savory tapas, meat and seafood dishes, paella, and homemade desserts. To give you an idea of the storied legacy of the Columbia, this was one of Babe Ruth's favorite restaurants, where the baseball legend would go to order two 14-ounce filets in a row.

St. Augustine is truly an American original. Let New Home Source help you find a new home in the nation's foremost "Ancient City."
