A very old city, Brunswick began life as part of a land grant from King George II. Back then, while surveyors noted the area's exceptional beauty, most settled to the south and east of the area. For a long time this Eden was untouched. Later in its lifetime Brunswick could tell a different story about itself: once it was linked to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, the Brunswick area became a transportation hub.
You can hear more about Brunswick's days as a center of commerce and transportation at the Brunswick Railroad Museum. Although the train enthusiasts in your family (of all ages) will appreciate this the most, everyone will love touring the museum's authentically-decorated Victorian rooms.
Although undoubtedly beautiful and historic, this town on the Potomac River actually has a very comfortable, small-town feel. Part of this might be due to the area's full events calendar. Brunswick residents love to observe the winter holidays together, enjoy the sunshine in the summers, and just generally socialize. You can expect a good turnout for events like Hometown Holidays and a town-wide Halloween party.
That's not all, either. You may not know about other events, like the annual Brunswick barbeque, Red White and Brew, or the Brunswick Bicycle Festival, or the Potomac Street Mile Race. Brunswick Railroad Days, a celebration of the town's heritage, also always draws a crowd. Mark those events on your calendars, too. Any event organized in Brunswick is sure to be worthwhile.
Brunswick is a great place to live-- not for the history or the events, but for the sense of community and the quality of life available here. Where else in the D.C. area can you camp within miles of the beautiful West Virginia border? Where will all your neighbors know your name? Where can you enjoy a historic downtown-- minus all the tourists? Brunswick flies under the radar in D.C. real estate. But that's good news for you, because chances are, you'll want to keep this beautiful area all to yourself.
