This little town outside of Durham may look old-fashioned and Southern at first glance, but it's so much more than that. For instance: the downtown historic district may be on the National Register of Historic Places, but now it hosts block parties. The visitor's center, housed in an eighteenth-century Quaker house, now helps new folks in town find their way. Hillsborough residents are also both self-sufficient and progressive: locals head to Nash Street Homebrew, a brewer's supply store, to pick up ingredients to help them brew their own beer. And the Eno River Farmers' Market connects residents to local produce, eggs, meat, cheese, and crafts vendors, all in a beautiful natural setting on the river.
The major draw for Hillsborough residents is how close it is to Durham and to Research Triangle Park. The economic powerhouse of the Southeast, this research-oriented region welcomes companies at the top of their industry, from around the world. The RTP already houses the offices of IBM, GlaxoSmithKline, Bayer, DuPont, Cisco, Credit Suisse, and the Environmental Protection Agency. There's no telling how far such a rich pool of talent can take the city of Raleigh-Durham. With Duke University, UNC-Chapel Hill, and NC State nearby, this region of North Carolina will remain profitable, and become even more influential, over time. You can be a part of that success story, simply by moving to Hillsborough and contributing your own energy and skills to the RTP.
After work, the great outdoors is waiting. Hillsborough is in the middle of Piedmont North Carolina, a region known for its gently sloping hills, deciduous trees, and many streams and rivers. You can get a feel for the area at the Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, where two miles of trails wind through the highest natural point in Orange County. But truly, that is just a start. The Eno River, state and local parks, and all the natural places you'll discover, are worth the time they take to explore.
Hillsborough is said to retain a small population of artists and writers. Aside from its history, it's easy to see why this town would attract a creative mind. A number of small-town curiosities exist in Hillsborough, such as the historic Occoneechee Speedway Trail, a former NASCAR track now forgotten. Old homes and gardens dot the landscape. Ayr Mount is just one of those homes, built in 1815 on the banks of the Eno River, but you will love the thrill of discovering others like it.
Hillsborough is anything but predictable, but at New Home Source we can predict you will love it here. Let us help you find a new home to match the quirky, charming spirit of the little town itself.
