A little-known gem, Melbourne describes itself as "the Harbor City" about an hour east of Orlando. If you want to live on the coast, but maintain access to one of Florida's largest cities, Melbourne is a great choice. It becomes an even better choice when you take into account this It is not far from Titusville, Florida, the home of the Kennedy Space Center, and by extension, the whole space program in Florida. This area proudly refers to itself as the "Space Coast," and indeed, the space program has been the engine behind many, if not all, of its successes. As the home of the Florida Institute of Technology, you can imagine Melbourne's future continues to be bright. Forbes magazine recognized that in 2005, including Melbourne in its annual "100 Best Places" list. Even as the Space Coast struggles to reimagine itself, Melbourne is already planning for a high-tech future.
On the weekends your days will be filled by endless sun and sand, plus the pleasure of exploring an interesting coastline. Two bodies of water, the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, plus a barrier island, make Melbourne what it is. The good news for you is that this complicated geography means more beaches. The Sebastian Inlet State Recreation Area is one such beach. It is known for blue skies and for the sea turtles who make their way on land sometimes. Another beach, simply named Paradise Beach, lives up to the billing. Whether you're raising a family or retiring, you will be treating yourselves to a daily vacation by making the move to Melbourne.
You don't need to go to Orlando for big-city entertainment or culture. Both are alive and well right here. Melbourne residents have their own art museum, the Foosaner Art Museum, a symphony orchestra, and an historic district replete with homes and buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Those buildings include the Rosseter House and Gardens, which have their own museum, the Florida Power and Light Company Ice Plant, and William Gleason House. Most of these old homes date from late 19th or early 20th centuries. Bring your camera-- you will want to capture these beautiful old homes on film, and perhaps take a family portrait or two.
If you like to golf on the weekends, you're in luck. As in many Florida oceanfront communities, you will find many of your neighbors share that interest. Get to know them better at the Duran Golf Club and the Baytree National Golf Links. Florida is justifiably famous for its golf. It's still up to you to improve your score, however. Should you come out worst in your golf game, heading downtown afterwards for a round of drinks and a nice dinner will sooth your ego. Downtown Melbourne is known for its array of restaurants and good nightlife.
If you need to get away for a day or a weekend, the possibilities are endless. As soon as your kids figure out how close you are to Orlando, prepare to acquire annual passes to Disney World. The east coast of Florida is a playground for sun worshippers and surfers. But why limit it to that? Port St Lucie, Palm Beach, and Daytona Beach are all within easy reach, and each offers a different perspective on "Florida living." Happy road-tripping!
