Asheville is, without a doubt, one of the most desirable towns in the U.S. Pick a year-- any year-- and any major magazine, travel site, or travel blog on the Internet, and they all rave about Asheville. In 2012, the city appeared in Conde Nast Traveler, Examiner.com, and Outside magazine for amenities like the Biltmore Estate, its outdoor recreation opportunities, and its craft-beer scene. In 2011, TripAdvisor, Good Morning America, and Fodors made it their mission to publicize Asheville as an overlooked vacation destination.

Truth is, Asheville was never that overlooked. Now people around the country associate Asheville with the Blue Ridge Mountains, a farm-to-table restaurant scene, and an artsy vibe. The University of North Carolina at Asheville is the city's heartbeat. The students at UNCA are some of the most progressive in the U.S., and their activism initiatives invigorate the rest of the community. That's not the only group of college kids that has an impact on the city. Asheville is also home to Brevard College, Western Carolina University, and Warren Wilson College. If you're bringing kids with you to Asheville, it's fairly safe to say there is a college degree in their future.

Another large part of Asheville's success depended on luck. It was blessed with a temperate climate and jaw-dropping scenery. If you like that sort of thing (and most do!) you'll be hooked right away, as soon as you drive in the most scenic highway in America, the Blue Ridge Parkway. To truly get out in nature-- and ditch the car-- the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a great place to do just that. Bring a map and go hiking in the park's 850 miles of trails. Or, if you prefer the water, bring a kayak and explore the mountains' rivers.

If the weather is bad for a day or two (a rarity in North Carolina, but it does happen), head inside, to the grand interior of the Biltmore Estate, the largest home in the country. The son of a wealthy industrialist created this estate to express the Vanderbilt family's power and refinement. The Estate doubles as a vineyard, but it is better-known for the warm welcome it extends to curious guests.

Another "indoor" option is even closer to home: shopping! The downtown area has a wide selection of shops, over 30 art galleries, and lots of small eateries. Visit on the second Saturday of every month, and you'll not only have access to the galleries, but also to artists' studios, because they open up to the public only on this day each month. And do take advantage of all the cheap, wholesome food at local restaurants. In a place that calls itself "Foodtopia," there are 250 restaurants and 12 farmers' markets. You will eat like a king, but pay like a pauper.

The travel bloggers may have just discovered it, but locals have known this for decades: Asheville is a great place to live. New Home Source can help you discover your place in Asheville in one of our brand-new homes.
