The secret is out about this gem of a southern city. The fastest growing region in South Carolina, the Columbia area is a wonderful place for people of all ages to call home. Notably, CNN's Money Magazine named it as one of the top 25 places to retire because of its vibrant walkable downtown and great amenities. It was also named one of the best "outside" towns for the plethora of outdoor activities it boasts. Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Columbia sees the crossing of three rivers. The Congaree River is gorgeous and you can even tube right through the heart of town on it! There are many parks along the city's rivers like the Harbison State Forest, the Sesquicentennial State Park, the Three Rivers Greenway, and the Riverfront Park. Plus, the city is only an hour and a half, either direction, to the Blue Ridge Mountains or the coastal towns along the Atlantic.

The University of South Carolina is located right downtown, helping to bring a young lifestyle to the city. Be sure to see the South Carolina State Museum, the largest museum in the state. It is located in an old mill building and has separate wings for the science and technology, history, arts, and cultural history. It has a great children's exhibit, but be sure to go to the EdVenture Children's Museum, full of interactive fun. The Columbia area has a wide variety of cultural offerings and great small towns. Locals have long been attending shows put on by Town Theater, a great local theater company still in its original 1917 theater. The Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens is a wonderful and unique zoo, where over 2,000 species are housed in natural habitats.

The generally diverse and strong economy of the area is home to the headquarters of companies like Colonial Life and Accident Insurance Company and Nexsen Pruit, LLC, a very important and large southern law firm. This economic vibrancy has led to some great downtown development. New condos and apartments are going quick, especially ones in the mixed use neighborhoods like Five Points and Congaree Vista. Five Points in particular is known for its "eclectic" local shops while Congaree Vista houses more upscale restaurants and a ton of art galleries worth a visit. The Art Bar is a great, unique stop for nightlife. Be sure to venture to the City Market Antiques Mall too, to get some great finds for your house or garden.
