According to city spokeswoman Jessica Alexander, Glendale is a city with "one foot in the past, and one foot in the future." No matter how busy or complicated life gets, you'll always have a home, as well as a safe, welcoming place to relax, in what residents like Ms. Alexander refer to as "everybody's hometown." Indeed, Glendale values its past: the city's Western heritage is alive and well in the form of Desert Cabelleros Western Museum. Nearby, Landmark Elementary School is over a hundred years old, yet some parts of the original campus are still intact.
Yet this town remains a leader in an ever-changing present, with local facilities like the Jobing.com arena, which draws crowds from all over the Phoenix area to watch entertainment acts and sports teams you'll only find in Glendale. Known as the "sports district" of Phoenix, this little town hosts the Phoenix Coyotes and the Arizona Cardinals. In addition, the home of the Coyotes, the Jobing.com arena, also hosts traveling events. In the past Cirque du Soleil visited the town; so did the Rolling Stones and Bette Midler. Living in Glendale, you'll always have a short commute to big-ticket events in the Phoenix area.
Locals and tourists alike love downtown Glendale. Here you'll browse shops with names like, "Apple Tree," "The Country Maiden," and even a full-time astrologist's shop, The Astrology Store. You'll also need to visit the local chocolate factory, which is "required viewing" for visitors and new residents of Glendale--try their sweet treats and you'll be converted to the virtue of locally-produced candy. Dining well is something of a community pastime in Glendale. Several local restaurants--La Piazza pizzeria, and Haus Murphy's, a German restaurant--were featured on the Food Network in "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives." While Italian and German may not seem like "homestyle cuisines," the chefs of both restaurants have an eye on the needs of hometown diners.
Parents, take note: the local schools have a huge presence in the community. This is truly a family-oriented town. Why else would firefighters turn up at the local elementary school to read to local children? In addition, community events often feature kid-friendly activities. Sahuaro Ranch is a great example of a destination for the whole family-- couples can linger in the rose garden in Sahuaro Ranch, while kids participate in the simple-but-engaging activities of "Touch-a-Truck." Locals have preserved the best of their past for the sake of the future--a future where children and young adults are front and center.
Even the parks and recreation department bases some of its programming around kids. Most events are less expensive for families than for singles, and less expensive for residents than non-residents. As Jessica Alexander says, this helps "create community." The Thunderbird Conservation Park and Foothills Park are both local, but if you go further afield you'll discover the Estrella Mountain Regional Park, White Tank Mountain Regional Park, and others all beloved for their majestic views and challenging hiking trails.
