In many ways, this chic, polished city defies classification. It is home to some of the Phoenix area's most beautiful natural views -- but also some of the most exciting nightlife between the East and West Coasts. It is filled with development, yet a huge section of it remains untouched. What kind of place is Scottsdale? That's part of the appeal: you always have to dig a little deeper to find out.

If you move or have ever moved in architecture circles, you'll know that Scottsdale is well-respected. Not only is the area home to Frank Lloyd Wright's homage to the desert scenery, Taliesin West. He is not the only architect or designer to draw inspiration from the blue skies and natural monuments of the Phoenix area either. Tom Weiskopf's golf courses, Pinnacle and Monument, also allude to their surroundings more often than not. Of course you can find more traditional courses, like those at the Gainey Ranch Golf Club, McCormick Ranch Golf Club, and many others, in Phoenix, but you owe it to yourself to discover what a golf course can become when you incorporate the natural growth patterns of the Southwest into its design. The results speak for themselves, and they are beautiful.

Thanks to environmentally-conscious residents, that natural scenery isn't going anywhere anytime soon. In a move that would be almost unthinkable today, or anywhere else, Scottsdale residents in the 70s voted to close over a third of their city to development. The result was the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, now over 17000 acres.

It might be said that art, nature, and architecture work hand-in-hand here. Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, famous for the "Knight Rise" installation by artist James Turrell, based on the movement of light in the desert sky. Summer Spectacular ArtWalk. Celebrate the end of the day, when the sun sinks behind the mountains and the air gets cooler, with a visit to the ArtWalk.

For its (relatively) small size, Scottsdale has a vibrant metropolitan life. One of the largest malls in the country, Scottsdale Fashion Square, is located here. It's where the hip and well-dressed of Scottsdale go to become even hipper and better-dressed. Naturally you can find Dillard's, Macy's, and Nordstrom, but also Barney's of New York, Neiman Marcus, and Prada. That's not all: how about Free People, 7 For All Mankind, Lacoste, Juicy Couture, and even such crave-worthy brands as Salvatore Ferragamo, Tory Burch, kate spade new york? Most agree that Scottsdale has the best shopping in the Phoenix area, bar none. Even more shopping awaits you in Old Town Scottsdale.

Scottsdale attracts more than just prospective residents in search of the good life. It also brings in tourists from places as cosmopolitan as New York City-- sophisticates who need a change of scenery but expect the same level of stimulation and excitement they'd receive at home. What better evidence of this phenomenon than the fact that Scottsdale has the most AAA Five-Diamond Hotels than any other city in the U.S. outside of New York City and Las Vegas? Hospitality is a prime industry here, and Scottsdale residents, diverse and eclectic themselves, will welcome you into their city with the same hospitality that made their hotels famous and well-respected.

For those who just have to be near the action, Old Town Scottsdale is your best bet on a Friday night. South and Clubs with names like Zuzu Lounge, Martini Ranch, Myst, and Afterlife welcome everyone from everyday Phoenicians20-somethings to Hollywood celebs. If you're not a night owl, you can have fun downtown too--just book a reservation at one of the area's ultramodern fusion restaurants. Central Scottsdale is favored by the young and single, while families and couples tend to congregate in north Scottsdale. Although the demographics skew young and affluent, there is room for everyone in this welcoming town.
