If you're not familiar with the D.C. area, you may not know this, but Germantown rocks. This city is one of the largest and most interesting in Maryland, rivaling even Baltimore and D.C. not only in population size, but in the size of its economy, and the scope of its cultural amenities. It's also convenient to more than one city in Maryland. Commuters not only work in D.C., but also in Bethesda and Silver Spring and Rockville, and even in Baltimore.

Many find that they do not even have to commute to and from Germantown in order to find opportunity. Companies such as Library Systems and Services have their headquarters right here. Others, like Qiagen, Wabtec, and GE Aviation, maintain offices here. The U.S. Department of Energy has a significant presence in the Germantown area, too, dating back to the days when the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission relocated here to protect D.C. from nuclear attack. Needless to say, Germantown remains one of the most innovative pockets of Maryland, and remains famous for its association with glamorous, high-tech industries.

Germantown's name is appropriate because, like a European city, it packs a lot of interesting things to do and see within its boundaries. One of its main attractions is undoubtedly the state-of-the-art BlackRock Center for the Arts. Since its inception in the early 90s, this center has welcomed traveling bands, musicians, dance troupes, and theatre groups of every stripe. It is far more than a performance venue, though. The BlackRock Center also gives back to the community, in the form of classes, summer camps, and affordable shows for kids and families.

As you might expect of a city named "Germantown," there's also an awesome Oktoberfest every year. Although Germantown isn't technically German (it got its name from a group of English travelers who were mistaken about the nationality of the majority of people who lived here), that's no excuse to deny yourself sauerkraut, wiener schnitzel, and the sounds of the area's best German folk bands.
