Rarely has a town been so impacted by geology as Point of Rocks. For
starters, the town's unusual name comes from that unusual geology. The
Catoctin Formation, visible from a particularly point on the Potomac
(hence, "Point of Rocks") looms over this area, striking many a visitor
with awe and wonder at the beauty of the natural world.
Today Point of Rocks still has that effect on visitors. Only perhaps
more so, for time has had its chance to add even more mystery to the
formation. Not only is the Catoctin Formation striking to look at, it
also played a role in the Civil War, as a landmark for Confederate
lieutenant J.S. Mosby, whose troops routed Jubal Early's not too far
from here.
Point of Rocks is full of fascinating points of historical
significance. Another such point is the old train station, on the
National Register of Historic Places. The development of the great
railroads during the latter half of the nineteenth century had an
enormous impact on the town, adding wealth to its coffers and people to
its Census reports. As a favorite battleground of the Baltimore and Ohio
Railroad and Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, who both sought control over
the area's premium land, the town also played a role in settling that
great rivalry in the transportation industry.
