Located along the Ohio River, Gallipolis has a proud history that dates back to the 1700s when a small group of French immigrants decided to make a home for themselves here. This is why the city was and is still referred to as The City of The Gauls. It is the second-oldest settlement in the Northwest. Gen Marquis de Lafayette, the French Revolutionary War hero visited the town in 1825 and left his jacket that is now proudly displayed at the Our House Museum.
Whilst the river is an attraction for most people, the charm of Gallipolis is the public square, City Park with its sycamore trees. It is flanked by stately homes and storefronts but provides the best view of the Ohio River with barges bopping in the water like bathtubs and fishermen casting their lines in the hopes of catching something. City Park is the entertainment center of town. It hosts all kind of festivals.

The University of Rio Grande is not far from the town but and the Gallipolis Career College offers a lot of great courses. There aren’t a lot of employment opportunities besides those found at local stores and tourist venues. However, The Holzer Medical Center, Ohio Valley Electric and American Electric Power Company make up for most of the opportunities for Gallipolisians.
