Atwater is located right off of State Route 99 and sits west of Merced, just east of Hilmar. Steeped in Tradition, Atwater has become a solid community with influences from the roots of local agriculture and the former Castle Air Force Base. Each remains an important fixture in the city and has influenced the community in a number of ways. Atwater is a progressive community with a knack for assisting and cultivating new business. The city is rapidly growing and residential development continues to expand. The community has seen a rise in commercial investment, construction, and services to accommodate the rapidly growing population. The city has solidified itself in the food processing, farming, and light manufacturing as its main job providers for the area but has slowly spread its reach into other markets.
The city of Atwater has a steady population of about 30,000. There are two high schools in the area, Atwater High and Buhach Colony, as well as eight elementary schools. The city of Atwater enjoys a working relationship with various higher-level education providers in the area, including Merced Community College & University of California Merced. The local community stands behind its schools and is proud of the achievements of their students, as well as their faculty, staff, and volunteers that are associated with the school district.
Atwater is home to a number of entertainment spots and eateries. Canele is a great place for weekend brunch, but if you want to save time and a few bucks, try a burrito from Hugo’s Tacos right across the street. Love tasty treats and baked goods? Proof is small but amazing bakery with some of the best croissants in California. If you are a chef all your own and in need of fresh, organic produce stop by the Atwater Village Farmers Market. Every Sunday, dozens of local farmers bring their freshest produce into town.
Many would think that Atwater would be crawling with hipsters after gaining some recognition as one of the six best emerging neighborhoods on the planet from Details magazine. But the city remains uncrowded and neighborly. Situated near the center of town, Atwater’s residential streets are lined with towering palm trees and dogs waiting on leashes outside of their owner’s local business. Atwater is essentially the best of both worlds: it is as relaxed as the suburbs but has the culture and feel of the city.
