Galveston, Texas is ranked the number one cruise port on the Gulf Coast and number four in the nation. It’s truly a sight to see for water and beach lovers. This coastal city is located on Galveston Island and Pelican Island in the State of Texas, southeast of the Houston area. Its main access point from the mainland is the Interstate Highway 45 causeway that crosses the West Bay.
Galveston is also known for its significant preservation and revitalization of historic 19th century architectural buildings like the 1894 Grand Opera House, the Galvez Hotel, Ashton Villa and the Michel B. Menard House. Some of the other historical places that define this area include the Silk Stocking National Historic District, Cedar Lawn and Fort Travis as well as the Strand National Historic Landmark District which hails from the Victorian Era and has now been adapted to fit restaurants, antique stores, museums and art galleries. It is also the home to some historic ships like the USS Cavalla and USS Stewart. However, just because Galveston prides itself on these historic building doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have a great selection of newly built housing for residents to enjoy.
Being that Galveston is a major tourist destination, some of most popular attractions include the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, Moody Gardens Botanical Park, the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum, Galveston Railroad Museum as well as Porretto Beach and Stewart Beach.
As for entertainment the annual Mardi Gras Festival, Galveston ArtWalk and Galveston Island Jazz and Blues Festival represent the many forms of exciting entertainment that this city has to offer.
