For dog owners, where you live matters. Beyond floor plans, fenced yards, and community amenities for life at home, the city you choose can expand the opportunities to enjoy life with your dog, from scenic trails to dog-friendly restaurants, pet-friendly workplaces, and quality veterinary care.

Dog ownership is increasing in the United States, and the role dogs play in the family is changing too. For a growing number of owners, dogs aren't simply pets, but much-loved family members. That bond is influencing major life decisions.

MetLife found that 15% of pet owners have accepted or turned down a job because of their pet, while Rover.com reports the majority of dog owners associate their pet with their personal well-being, and that pets are influencing how people build friendships and relationships.

Pet ownership is also becoming an important factor in where people choose to live.

Dog owners are increasingly drawn to new-home construction, where home and community designs combine to create a lifestyle that benefits both people and their pets. Choosing a home in a dog-friendly city adds another layer to those benefits.

There's no single ranking of the best cities for dog owners because different studies measure different qualities. Here are seven cities recognized for strengths ranging from dog-friendly dining and remote work to outdoor recreation and affordable veterinary care, along with nearby new-home communities where you can begin your home search.

1. Austin, Texas

Dog Data: Where You Can Bring Your Dog Almost Anywhere

The dog-friendly culture in Austin is well-established, so owners can feel comfortable bringing their furry friends along for errands, dining out, and a host of other daily activities. According to Austin’s official tourism bureau, “where the locals go, their dogs go to.” Beyond businesses, popular destinations like Red Bud Isle and the Lady Bird Lake trail system make it easy to get outdoors. Austin's dog-loving culture is reflected in events like Barks for Beers, a month-long fundraiser that brings together 30 dog-friendly breweries across Central Texas.

2. Phoenix, Arizona

Dog Data: Pet-Friendly Living Meets Dog Desert Adventures

The Greater Phoenix area has earned a reputation as one of America's most pet-friendly metropolitan areas, thanks to its abundance of parks, trails, and pet-focused amenities.

According to a survey from WalletHub, Scottsdale is ranked the most pet-friendly city in the United States in 2026. The survey ranked cities based on three key metrics: pet budget, pet health and wellness, and outdoor pet-friendliness. Phoenix, meanwhile, cracked the top 20 overall.

Beyond the rankings, the region's desert landscape offers a unique backdrop for exploring with dogs, with scenic preserve trails, mountain parks, and countless opportunities to get outdoors together.

3. Raleigh, North Carolina

Dog Data: 100+ Miles of Trails, for a New Walk Every Day

In yet another list, using different metrics, Raleigh was named the pet-friendliest city in the United States by a MarketWatch survey. The methodology centered on dog friendliness (number of pet activities, dog-friendly restaurants, and dog-friendly apartments per capita), dog walkability (number of days per year a dog can comfortably play outside and dog parks per capita), and pet health (availability and affordability of veterinary care in each city).

Adding to its appeal, Raleigh's Capital Area Greenway System offers more than 100 miles of connected trails where residents can enjoy walks with their dogs through parks and natural areas.

4. Seattle, Washington

Dog Data: Where Dogs Outnumber Children

For dog owners who consider their pets part of the family and are looking for a community with numerous other dogs and owners to connect with, Seattle is a natural fit. In fact, fur babies reportedly outnumber children here, and Seattle has embraced a lifestyle where dogs are woven into everyday life.

The outdoor-centric culture is particularly fun for dogs, with vast off-leash dog parks, hiking trails, beaches for year-round swims, and a host of dog-friendly taprooms and cafes where owners can gather with their dogs too.

If you work at home, it is easy to work with your pets nearby throughout the day. However, if you require co-working space as part of your workflow, Miami is where you want to live. According to a recent survey from CoWorking Cafe, Miami tops the list for pet-friendly co-working space, and as a bonus, has a high pet lifestyle ranking too, meaning the city is dense with pet services, like vets and groomers.

Notably, although Miami leads for pet-friendly co-working, Florida claims four cities within the top 20, including Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Orlando.

6. Atlanta, Georgia

Dog Data: Most Pup Cups Per Capita

Atlanta reportedly has more pup cups per capita than any other U.S. city, making it easy to treat your four-legged companion on the go. Beyond the novelty, the metro also offers an abundance of dog parks, pet-friendly patios and trails, making it a great place for active dog owners.

7. Orlando, Florida

Love to dine out and try new restaurants? If you lived in Orlando, you’re more likely to visit one where you can bring your dog too. Orlando has nearly 195 dog-friendly restaurants per 100,000 residents, the highest concentration among the 59 U.S. cities analyzed.

Meanwhile, there are hundreds of patios that welcome dogs for outdoor dining. Orlando’s active patio culture, many dog parks, and warm, year-round temps are attractive features for dog owners.
